The most popular new yearโs resolutions are always around diet and fitnessโโbut they are closely followed by the desire to get a new job in the coming 12 months.
Itโs understandable: the end of a year offers a period of reflection, and if it has been a tough year at workโโwhich it has been for many European employeesโโthen a new job can seem like a particularly desirable goal to achieve.
Tech layoffs hit home from mid-2022, with the tech giants Alibaba, Meta and Amazon shedding staff. Closer to home, Dance, a Berlin-based e-bike subscription service, let 16% of its workforce go. Swedish fintech Klarna announced plans to lay off 10% of its global workforce in May, and then in July, saw its valuation slashed by 85%.
Robust sectors
Despite further layoff announcements so far this year from Microsoft, Alphabet and Salesforce among others, the sector as a whole remains robust. According to global market research company Forrester, European tech spend growth will be more sluggish in 2023, but the company predicts that growth will still be 3.6% this year.
Software will be the largest tech category by 2027, accounting for a 31% share of tech spend, up from 23% pre-pandemic, and European tech spend will grow about 4.8% to 5.5% a year from 2024 to 2027.
Another area Forrester points to as a growth area is the cloud. โTo better scale around ongoing change and to cut down energy cost, in 2023, tech leaders across Europe will leverage cloud technologies to drive operational resilience whilst improving flexibility elsewhere,โ it said in its European Predictions 2023: Technology report.
The company also singles out AR and VR technologies. โAugmented- and virtual-reality technologies will underpin interdisciplinary cooperation to build collaborative solutions to improve customer and employee experiences,โ it says.
Greentech or cleantech is on the rise too, fuelled by the 58% of European online adults who actively monitor their home energy usage in order to reduce their environmental footprint.
And other safe bets include cybersecurity, underpinned across the bloc by the EU Cybersecurity Strategy which has identified key technologies such as AI, encryptions, quantum computing, and future generation networks being essential to cybersecurity.
Data science is yet another growth area to consider in 2023. The global big data market is expected to grow to $103 billion by 2027, according to Statista. Thatโs more than double its market size in 2018. The sheer volume of data is fuelling this, with the International Data Corporation (IDC), saying global data will grow to 163 billion terabytes by 2025.
