Empowered employees are at the negotiation table. As flexible working models forced by the pandemic opened our eyes to the long-term benefits of remote work, many tech professionals are reluctant to go back to the “old normal”. In fact, in a recent McKinsey survey, four out of five survey respondents who worked in hybrid models in the last two years wanted to retain them going forward.
In tandem, the same research showed that younger employees (18 – 34 years old) were 59% more likely to leave a company than older employees (55 – 64 years old), if hybrid working wasn’t available. On the ground, groups in tech are mobilising, and in the case of Apple, employees are threatening to quit due to strict return-to-office policies.
Compared to other industries, the tech switch to remote work was relatively easy. So much so that many organisations, like Dropbox, Lyft and Okta, are keeping the option of full remote for most employees. There is a lot of movement in the jobs market, and both remote and hybrid-work policies and roles are centre stage.
That’s not to say organisations have mastered hybrid just yet. Like anything, it has its pros and cons, and 2022 will be a significant year of trial and error.
If an office is split between hybrid and remote, there can be a disconnect between those who choose to be physically in the office and those who do not. Proximity bias means that workers who show more face at the office will be more likely to receive promotions. The scheduling and logistics of hybrid will take time to settle, and approaches set out will not suit every employee.
On the plus side, hybrid working offers continued flexibility and has helped employees take stock of their work-life balance. For those with young children, flexible working helps with childcare, drop-offs and collections, and it has strong potential for inclusion policies when well thought out. Hybrid working’s strength is that it gives employees flexibility and autonomy, while still preserving a social culture.
