Amsterdamse EdTech startup krijgt 1,35 miljoen om de wereld in trekken

De startup StuDocu, in Nederland beter bekend als StudeerSnel heeft vandaag 1,35 miljoen euro aan funding ontvangen. Het Amsterdamse bedrijf wil hiermee uitbreiden, niet alleen binnen Europa, maar meteen wereldwijd aldus mede-oprichter Jacques Huppes: “Vooral Engelstalige landen zijn interessant.”

Alle kennis op één platform

StudeerSnel is onder Nederlandse studenten een begrip. Zo claimt de startup dat er van de 650.000 studenten in ons land een goede 400.000 een account hebben. Via de gratis website is het mogelijk voor studenten om samenvattingen, oude tentamens en college-aantekeningen te delen. Het platform is vijf jaar geleden als klein studentenproject begonnen door de toenmalige studenten Jacques Huppes, Marnix Broer, Lucas van den Houten en Sander Kuijk. Inmiddels werken er 24 werknemers en hebben ze de ambitie om alle kennis van van studenten en universiteiten over de hele wereld samen te brengen op één platform.

StuDocu de wereld in

Naast Nederland, is de startup ook al actief in België, Duitsland, Spanje, Canada en Australië. Huppes: “In Spanje hebben we moenteel ruim 27.000 gebruikers. We merken dat studenten daar heel enthousiast zijn en veel documenten met elkaar delen.” In Australië en Canada, waar de startup respectievelijk 30.000 en 14.000 gebruikers heeft, gaat het wat minder snel. “Maar die landen zijn voor ons juist interessant. Niet alleen omdat de doelgroep daar groot is, ook omdat ze Engelstalig zijn. Engelstalige documenten kunnen ook weer voor veel andere landen van belang zijn.”

Marketing

Om stevige voet aan de grond te krijgen in nieuwe landen, zal flink wat aan marketing gedaan moeten worden. Een deel van de investering zal daar ook aan besteed worden. “We profileren ons vooral op Facebook en andere sociale netwerken”, zegt Huppes. “We zoeken de studenten op, op de plaatsen waar ze toch al veel komen.” Huppes benadrukt dat het delen van documenten en tentamens niet alleen voor studenten voordelig kan zijn. “We willen ook alle oude tentamens publiceren, om zo een eerlijk speelveld te creëren. Uiteindelijk kunnen docenten zo gemotiveerd raken om nieuwe vragen te bedenken.” Niet elke docent is daar even blij mee, maar het is voor StuDocu nooit zo hoog opgelopen als enkele maanden terug met Stuvia, die op Belgische universiteiten verboden dreigde te worden. Huppes: “Alle onenigheid op het gebied van auteursrechten hebben we altijd onderling kunnen bijleggen.”

Nieuwe features voor StuDocu

De funding van 1,35 miljoen euro is afkomstig van het Nederlandse Peak Capital en de Duitse partij Point Nine Capital, die onlangs nog in de eveneens Amsterdamse startup Deskbookers investeerde. “We hebben 250.000 documenten en 2 miljoen universitaire tentamenvragen online staan”, vertelt Huppes. “We moeten steeds slimmere manieren verzinnen om de juiste info aan de gebruiker te tonen. Door de kennis en de contacten van Peak en Point Nine, kunnen we hier grote slagen in maken. En het geld helpt natuurlijk ook om de komende maanden het technische team te versterken.” Er staan enkele nieuwe functies op de planning. Komende maand moet daar meer over bekend worden, voor nu mag Huppes daar nog niets over zeggen.
