Ever wondered what a voting system like the one used by the Eurovision contest could do for startups? The victory of Kalush Orchestra from Ukraine this year shows such a system could be a game changer for startups at the leading edge of innovation. While there is no Eurovision Startup contest, Dealflow.eu‘s Innovation Radar Prize comes very close to making it happen. You can vote for the Innovation Radar Prize here.

One of the biggest challenges facing startups and innovators is finding relevant investors. Started by the European Commission, Dealflow.eu discovers and supports the most promising EU-funded innovators. It acts as a vessel for these innovators to find relevant investors and corporations.

With access to the key innovations assessed by the EU Innovation Radar Committee and the ability to find huge scale-up potential, Dealflow.eu plays a key role in growth of EU-funded startups. It also organises a number of events and contests like the Innovation Radar Prize to help innovators secure the funding needed for future commercialisation.

Innovation Radar Prize: what you need to know

The Innovation Radar is an initiative by the European Commission that aims to identify high potential innovations and innovators in EU-funded research and innovation projects. The goal of Innovation Radar is to allow every citizen, public official, professional, and businessperson to discover the outputs of EU innovation funding.

The initiative also offers an opportunity for businesses to seek out innovators who could follow in the footsteps of companies such as Skype, TomTom, and ARM Holdings, all of whom received EU funding in their early days.

Like in the previous years, the Innovation Radar Prize is offering an opportunity for the public to assist the jury on their search for the best innovation of 2022. The public will be able to support best innovation of 2022 across three different categories:

  • Disruptive Health
  • Purpose-driven & Green
  • Kickstarter

The voting for Innovation Radar Prize is now open and will end on October 21. In addition to a jury, the public will also have the opportunity to vote for the Innovation Radar Prize. You can vote for the most innovative startup across the above mentioned categories by clicking here and each person will get to submit 1 vote per category.

The outcome will be considered by the jury for their selection of the 12 Innovation Radar Prize finalists. The finalists will pitch their innovation at an event on November 15 and you can sign up for the event here.

Disruptive Health: A look at key innovators

The pandemic has taught us that technology can absolutely upend our lives in terms of diagnostics and healthcare. This year’s Innovation Radar Prize category for Disruptive Health symbolically shows how the healthcare industry is not only embracing tech but also innovating in the space.

From the likes of Biopix-T offering an affordable portable (point-of-care) molecular diagnostic device for the detection of pathogens and mutations in human healthcare to Bitsens’ award-winning interface and product development with focus on lifestyle and health-care apps, there is innovation everywhere.

There is also Cherry Biotech, building an alternative to animal experiments with a platform to better predict drug effects on the human body, while Communicare Solutions is changing how we look at or define innovative patient support solutions. With its 3D simulation platform that allows cardiologists to simulate heart surgery before the actual surgery, Belgian startup FEOps will definitely win your heart.

Poland-based Genomtec is offering a unique mobile genetic diagnostics platform, while INNOVATION SPRINT is spearheading software as a medical device solution. The likes of Medexprim, Nvision Imaging Technologies, PRENSILIA, and Nadir Plasma & Polymers can be called leading examples of how technology is addressing common pain points like lack of streamlined medical data and even bringing quantum tech to the forefront.

You can vote for your favourite startup in the Disruptive Health category by clicking here.

Purpose-driven & Green: A look at key innovators

In the purpose-driven and green category, we are seeing how greentech can address modern day concerns like the effect of climate change on food production and growing demand for food with increase in population.

Portugal-based ALGAplus is demonstrating a form of farming that recreates what occurs naturally in the ecosystem, while Dutch startup Biota makes high value, organic fertilisers made from plant waste streams, essentially turning waste streams into a valuable resource.
German startup CNM technologies is addressing the need for demanding water separation processes with its composite membrane.

French startup Green Communications is enabling shortcuts in the data transportation path to reduce the carbon footprint of digital services. Germany’s INOQ develops plant-beneficial microbial biostimulants to support sustainable agriculture, while ObjectBox is an Edge Database and Data Sync solution to store and synchronise data in and around edge devices

To more efficiently plan hydrogen infrastructure (tedHy) and operate them (sopHy), France’s Persee is developing decision support software, while Powidian is reusing heavy duty cells coming from heavy mobility to provide a clean way to produce electricity for non-connected applications. This year, we also see the likes of R3 GIS from Italy and Svelte from Romania helping with the management of spaces efficiently and manufacturing of machines and cutting-edge solutions for topologically optimised construction elements.

You can vote for your favourite startup in the Purpose-driven & Green category by clicking here.

Kickstarter: A look at key innovators

The Kickstarter category presents all those innovations that have arisen in the context of the academy and other research projects. Within this category, the University of Porto is presenting a catalytic low-temperature (500-650ºC) methane decomposition reactor and catalyst as part of its 112CO2 innovation. Spain’s Vicomtech is proposing creation of an efficient scalable semi-automatic data platform to address the problem of a lack of software tools in the automotive industry.

The CIPROS innovation is a software tool from University of Cyprus that enables the combined utility of monitoring, operating, and investment planning of smart and resilient distribution systems. ABzero is offering an autonomous multimodal system for the delivery of blood through a smart capsule.

The University of Novi Sad Faculty of Sciences (UNSPMF), together with the Research
Department Cyber-Physical Systems
is introducing the Healthcare Open AI Platform that allows data collected and held at different hospitals and primary care centres to be used for training high-precision ML models. FotoInMotion innovation is offering a solution to bring new life to still photos with its automated processes for contextual data extraction, object recognition, creative transformation, editing and text animation.

This year’s participants under Kickstarter category also include ArrestAD innovation from University Paris Est Creteil (UPEC) that proposes a completely new glycobiology-based technology aiming to develop a new class of drug candidates able to prevent and/or arrest AD-neurodegeneration for patients and/or people at risk.

The depth of innovation is visible in a solution from Wagoo that detects the direction of arrival of an electromagnetic source such as smartphones, beacons, smartwatches, IoT objects, or any object that emits a BLE signal. The AMADEUS innovation is a latent heat thermophotovoltaic battery that stores the surplus of renewable generation and produces combined heat and power on demand. Last but not the least, IMPRESSIVE innovation wants to minimise the terrible impact generated by oil spills in the oceans

You can vote for your favourite startup in the Kickstarter category by clicking here.

Voting for Innovation Radar Prize 2022 is open till October 21 and you can vote by clicking here.
