Good news today for the Amsterdam-based company Media Distillery. The startup, which could be described as the Google for radio and television content, will receive 600.000 euros in funding from Dutch venture capital funds Peak Capital and Vortex Capital Partners.

International growth

The investment will help Media Distillery to further develop its platform and grow internationally. Since the founding in 2014, the startup has become the dominant player in the market, with state-of-the-art data mining techniques such as speech, logo and face recognition. With these technology, users can expect highly accurate and real time search results for media content, like radio and television clips. The platform works; in the past two years Media Distillery has analyzed over hundred thousand programs.

The service is populair with big media monitoring companies such as Lexis Nexis, Buzzcapture and Coosto, which uses the platform to inform their clients (like T-Mobile, McDonalds’s and Specsavers) when and how they receive media attention and brand mentions. The company also has journalistic endeavors – last year they developed a custom search tool for BNR Newsradio, a major Dutch radio channel, that allows users to easily search for specific content in an enormous media archive.

“This investment allows us to develop our platform further and to grow internationally”, says Roland Sars, CEO of Media Distillery. “The technology can be used to search within radio and television content, in real-time. Our service also alerts you when a certain brand, person or any other topic appears.”

One of the investment comes from Peak Capital. The Dutch venture capital fund has previously invested in CataWiki, CheapCargo and restaurant review website Iens, which was sold to TripAdvisor in 2015. “Searching and analyzing video and audio is still in its infancy”, says Johan van Mil of Peak Capital. “Media Distillery is leading in the market with fantastic and proven technology.” Evert Jan de Groot of Vortex Capital Partners adds: “It is impressive to see what the team has accomplished in such a short period of time. We therefore see great potential for Media Distillery, a company that can grow into a leading international player.”
