Is the great resignation over? Why job security matters

Last update:

Twitter and Stripe’s layoffs, rising interest rates across Europe, increased electricity and gas prices and continued concerns for a global recession in 2023 have seen workers crave security over flexibility as they look to protect their futures. The carefree attitude of late 2021 and early 2022 that saw workers jumping ship for salary bumps, flexible working and non-financial benefits has been replaced by a new cautious approach to employment.

In fact, a new study of 13,488 people across 15 countries by communications company BCW identified what’s most important to people in their work experience. Fifty-two percent of respondents rate job security, especially at a financially stable company, as most important. Similarly, 49% wanted a competitive base salary and adequate time off while 48% said workplace culture was important to them.

These statistics are interesting, but what does it mean in reality and how can we safeguard our careers? Within the workforce, this change in attitude has seen those who previously enjoyed the rise of the gig economy and working freelance now looking to take their skills in house, to bigger, more secure, companies. Many of those who took part in The Great Resignation are experiencing The Great Regret, and are trying to bed down and choosing security over progression and opting to stay put with their new employer.

A sharp shift

In the immediate post-Covid days, workers were looking to take advantage of a hot labour market with 40% admitting that they would change jobs within the next 12 months. This statistic has now flipped entirely with 50% of those surveyed by BCW now stating that they will be staying with their current employer for the foreseeable future. Those currently in precarious roles are looking to shift towards companies with more scope for growth – including cloud, AI and tech roles.

Apart from The Great Resignation, the pandemic also resulted in a sharp increase in the demand for tech professionals – as the sector increased to $250 billion in 2022, a 17.2% rise from 2021’s total of $217 billion. And, despite the global downturn, recent research from Gartner suggests that the sector will continue to grow, with spikes across cloud computing and consulting.

What does this mean for you? If you’re concerned about the longevity of your current role or company, it may be time to explore opportunities at companies operating within that space. For those with tech or cloud experience the transition is easy, but it doesn’t mean that only tech professionals can take advantage of growth. Marketing, communications, human resource management and financial skills are all in demand for companies operating across this space.
