Munich-based Avelios Medical, a provider of modern hospital information systems (HIS), has secured €30M in Series A funding intending to become the leading operating system for intelligent patient care.
The funding round was led by Sequoia Capital, with the participation of existing investors Revent and HTGF – High-Tech Gründerfonds.
Anas Biad, Partner at Sequoia Capital, says, “Building a complete hospital information system, including documentation, admin, billing, patient portal and more, is not for the faint-hearted, yet this is precisely what Avelios has built.”
“We were astounded by the depth and breadth of the product, as well as the feedback from their customers, which count some of the largest public and private hospitals in Germany. We are thrilled to partner with these exceptional founders and team as they deliver the modern operating system our healthcare deserves.”
Digitising hospitals for patient care
With SAP set to exit the HIS market by 2030, hospitals across Germany and Europe face a crucial opportunity to modernise their IT systems, improving care quality and efficiency.
A study by BARMER and the WHO reports that preventable medication errors cause 65,000 deaths annually in Germany, exceeding road traffic fatalities. A key factor is outdated hospital IT systems that fail to provide timely and well-structured data.
Additionally, a study by Marburger Bund highlights that doctors spend over three hours daily on administrative tasks, further impacting healthcare efficiency. To fix this, Avelios’ founders developed a hospital information system (HIS) from scratch to address inefficiencies in outdated medical IT.
Designed to support healthcare professionals, the system integrates with treatment workflows, reduces documentation burdens, and connects data across sectors. By structuring patient data throughout the care journey, Avelios leverages AI to enable innovations like automated diagnostics.
Avelios Medical offers a comprehensive hospital information system, covering treatment documentation, administration, and patient portals while adhering to top data security standards.
Data is stored securely in European data centres or within customers’ local infrastructure. Its modular microservice architecture allows hospitals to customise the system and implement it gradually or as a full replacement.
Avelios Medical is part of the digitisation strategy of several hospitals in Germany. Its hospital information system and patient portal are used by Sana, a private hospital chain with 56 facilities, as well as university hospitals including Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and Hannover Medical School.
Christian Albrecht, co-founder of Avelios, says, “Sequoia has consciously turned away from the classic, short-term investment cycle and focuses on companies that solve fundamental problems.”
“The digitisation of patient care requires long-term thinking and sustainable innovation. With Sequoia, we can deliver exactly that – a system built to stand the test of time.”
