Technology, politics, and mind.

Silicon Canals is an independent publication covering global innovation ecosystems, the political and policy forces shaping them, and the human behaviour that drives the people inside them. Founded in 2014 to document the rise of the European technology ecosystem, Silicon Canals has grown into a publication for readers who want to understand how technology and the world it creates actually work.

What we cover

Technology

Innovation ecosystems and the people building them. European startup news has been the foundation of Silicon Canals since 2014, and Amsterdam remains the heritage anchor of our coverage. We have widened that beat to include the world’s other rising innovation ecosystems — Singapore, Berlin, London, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, São Paulo, Bangalore, Seoul, Lagos. We cover the funding rounds, exits, and product launches that define each ecosystem, alongside the founders and operators inside them.

Politics

The forces shaping technology. Technology does not operate in a vacuum. Capital, regulation, geopolitics, and policy decisions made in Brussels, Washington, Beijing, and Singapore all shape what gets built and who benefits. We cover the political and policy structures behind the technology economy — surveillance, antitrust, AI regulation, EU industrial policy, sovereign capital, and the geopolitics of innovation.

Mind

The human behaviour behind the work. The same patterns that drive how people build companies also drive how they live the rest of their lives. We cover decision-making under uncertainty, attention and focus, identity and ageing, the psychology of work, and the everyday observations that explain how people behave at home and at the office. The Mind pillar sits inside Silicon Canals because the people building ecosystems are the same people who live inside them.

Editorial standards

Every published piece is editorially directed and reviewed before publication. AI tools support drafting, research, and editing — not editorial judgment. Factual claims are sourced and linked. Quotations are attributed. Images carry credits where available. We correct errors quickly and transparently. Significant corrections are noted at the foot of the article along with the date of revision. Opinion pieces are clearly labelled as such and attributed to a named contributor with a biography. We follow established journalistic practice for sensitive topics: medical, financial, and mental-health content is published with appropriate disclaimers and links to qualified professional advice.

Masthead

Silicon Canals is operated by Brown Brothers Media. A named Chief Publisher carries editorial accountability, six named writers contribute under their own bylines, and three editorial columns publish under their column names. The full masthead — Chief Publisher, Writers, and Columns — lives on a dedicated page.

Ownership and independence

Silicon Canals is published by Brown Brothers Media. Brown Brothers Media acquired Silicon Canals in November 2025 from its previous owner, who had founded the publication in 2014. Under the new ownership, Silicon Canals has been refocused around three editorial pillars, and the inherited archive has been reviewed and pruned of content that did not match our current editorial standards.

Mediavine provides our display advertising. Editorial decisions are made independently of advertising relationships. We do not accept payment in exchange for editorial coverage.
