Berlin-based theion, a company specialising in developing zero emission crystal batteries, has secured €15M in a Series A funding round from Team Global, Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen KG, and Enpal.

The German company will use the capital to solidify its position in Europe as a front-runner in next-generation battery innovation.

Theion: Developing sustainable battery tech

Led by Dr. Ulrich Ehmes, Theion is focused on sustainable battery technology.

The company’s crystal-sulfur technology is designed to create batteries that are three times lighter, more efficient, and cost-effective compared to conventional options.

Theion’s proprietary technology addresses the longstanding cycle-life challenges associated with sulfur batteries, paving the way for energy storage solutions that are long-lasting, ultra-light, and high-performing.

The company stated that the advancements of this solution could go beyond traditional uses and may impact industries like electric aviation, electric vehicle ranges, and sustainable energy storage.

The company says using sulfur has numerous benefits, which include being abundantly available, sustainable, and cost-effective, in contrast to critical battery materials like nickel and cobalt.

The Theion crystal battery is designed to be highly efficient and sustainable.

The company says that it has a capacity that triples the energy density, aiming for 1,000 Wh/kg, and can be charged in just minutes due to its fast charging capabilities.

It is also environmentally friendly, containing no cobalt, nickel, or harmful solvents, and is produced without harmful mining practices.

The cost of materials is low, with sulfur being just 1 per cent of NMC811, and it consumes only one-third of the energy along its value chain.
