Though surgery makes up a large portion of hospital budgets, clinical outcomes and the efficiency of surgical interventions differ between clinics. Generally, surgery is a specialist area where there is plenty of room for optimisation due to the low level of standardisation, differences in surgical techniques, and the lack of process-supporting tools. This is where Amsterdam-based Incision looks to make a difference by building a knowledge-based platform around surgery.

Incision claims to give people access to shared experiences, skills and expertise through its platform. Based in the SDG House in the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, the startup provides tools to get a quicker and thorough preparation for the OR. Its goal is to network 10,000 clinics and thus improve 100 million operations per year.

Incision raises funds

In a recent development, the Amsterdam-based startup has raised €5M in a fresh round of funding from SHS and Rubio Impact Ventures.

Rubio Impact Ventures, formerly known as Social Impact Ventures, is an investment company based in Amsterdam. It supports promising entrepreneurs, primarily in the Netherlands and NW EU, with growth capital and business tools to reach their full potential as well as enable them to achieve systemic change. Its investment is targeted towards 3 thematic areas: circular solutions, healthy living and people power.

As for Germany-based SHS, it is an investment company that focuses on medical technology, life science, diagnostics and digital health. The firm was founded in 1993 and has since gained experience as an industry investor and supports the growth of its portfolio companies through a network of partnerships regarding the introduction of new products, regulatory issues or entering new markets.

The company is currently investing in Incision from its fifth fund which received capital commitments of more than €130M.

Funds for expanding to new countries

Speaking on the development, the CEO of Incision, Ritsaart van Montfrans says, “We are very excited to have SHS & Rubio on-board as VCs so we can accelerate our international rollout and move faster towards our goal to connect 10,000 clinics with our platform.”

Incision reported that the raised capital will help the company to expand its services to the UK, Scandinavia, the Middle East, and Belgium. In addition, the platform will be expanded to include new functions with new learning materials, efficient work processes and the possibility of exchanging best practices. This is intended to improve the performance of individuals and teams in the OR.

New products and services for surgical staff

Incision platform focuses on the ‘5 moments of need method’ – Learn New; Learn More; Apply; Solve; and Change. The company believes this method will improve the surgical staff’s knowledge and performance.

Some of the benefits that the platform provides include:

  • 3D anatomy models
  • Interactive learning
  • Video courses for procedures, devices and skills
  • AI-driven video analysis to improve surgeons’ performance
  • Competence tracking
  • Teams User App

A knowledge platform around the topic of surgery

Founded in 2014 in Amsterdam by Prof. Dr. Theo Wiggers and various other entrepreneurial professionals, Incision is a platform for surgical performance and online training. The company is on a mission to improve surgical care. It is building a knowledge platform that supports the training and the execution of operations.

Currently, Incision employs more than 40 people internationally and has over 175 Universities and hospitals under contract globally. On its website, the company mentions that it has a medical advisory board with renowned international surgeons including Jaap Bonjer and David Farley.

Besides, the company also internationally contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #3 ‘Good health and wellbeing’ and #4 ‘Quality education’.
