Copenhagen-based Agrobiomics, a Danish agtech company, has secured €4M in funding from NOON Ventures to launch Fortify, a potent abiotic stress protectant for plants.
This solution aims to enhance climate resilience in agriculture, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by over 100 million tons annually and saving food worth up to €90B.
Making agriculture resilient to climate change
Global food security is at risk due to climate change, geopolitical factors, and the affordability of crop inputs. According to the USDA, drought and salinity stress are reducing arable land and farming yields, with losses estimated at €90B annually.
By 2050, 75 per cent of the global population will face drought impacts, highlighting the need for innovative agricultural solutions. Agrobiomics aims to make agriculture more resilient to climate change with its biological solution, Fortify, which boosts plant robustness against drought and salinity.
Founded in 2022, the company offers a nature-derived technology that uses an “unprecedented” low dose per hectare, helping farmers grow food more sustainably, reliably, and profitably.
Agrobiomics’ first product, Fortify, boosts crop yields and plant resilience under drought and salinity conditions across various crops, including soy and corn. With successful field trials and ease of integration into existing practices, Fortify offers a “plug-and-play” solution for farmers, presenting a market opportunity projected at over $2B.
Capital utilisation
Agrobiomics claims to have demonstrated an impact on sustainable agriculture and plans to expand trials across crops like soy, corn, and tomatoes, and in regions including Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa.
Ejner Bech Jensen, CEO of Agrobiomics, says, “We appreciate the trust NOON Ventures and BII has shown in Agrobiomics and our technology. Their experience in building companies and partnerships will be valuable and we share the vision of delivering big on the sustainable impact.”
“NOON Ventures’ investment will enable us to complete product development, upscale production, and launch Fortify across major markets.”
Jensen further adds, “In the past two years, our excellent team has built Agrobiomics from scratch, validated the IP with strong field results, and attracted significant partnerships. We have been greatly helped by BII, that is an incubator backed by the Novo foundation. This means we are on track to help farmers tackle challenges like drought and salinity, contributing to a significant CO2 reduction of more than 100 million tons annually, and potentially even enabling soil reclamation.”
“We aim to lead in BioAg, providing biological solutions for both abiotic and biotic stress, and aspire to replace pesticides with our natural, stable Streptomyces metabolites.”
Brief about NOON Ventures
Copenhagen’s VC fund NOON Ventures invests in transformative technologies addressing environmental and climate challenges. The firm works closely with selected companies, aiming to be business builders alongside entrepreneurs and dedicating the time to create lasting impact.
Speaking about the investment in Agrobiomics, Theis Malmborg, Partner at NOON Ventures, says, “The agricultural industry faces significant challenges to meet the requirements of a growing population, and the impact of climate-induced stress on our natural systems is adding to the pressing issues of the industry.”
“Agrobiomics has the potential to become a key enabler in building a climate resilient agricultural system with a biological solution that plugs directly into existing supply chain and agronomic practices.”
“We are proud to be backing the team and look forward to work together with them on advancing the technology and bring its products to the market.”
