On Tuesday, Cologne, Germany-based DeepL, a language AI company, announced the expansion of its API solution with two new features. It includes:
- DeepL next-generation language model
- DeepL API for Write
The next-gen model delivers more precise, accurate translations; while the introduction of DeepL API for Write provides users access to the company’s advanced writing tools, including grammar suggestions, spelling corrections, and more.
“The expansion of DeepL’s API solution with next-gen LLM-powered translations and advanced writing features is an important milestone for us as we further our mission to break down language barriers for businesses and enterprises around the world so that they can accelerate growth into new markets,” says Sebastian Enderlein, CTO, DeepL.
“With the DeepL API, businesses can integrate our Language AI tools directly into their own internal and external applications, such as email workflows, e-commerce platforms, and more, to overcome challenges ranging from language barriers to content localisation and writing clarity. It also maintains the rigorous enterprise-grade security standards that we are known for so that sensitive data is always protected,” adds Enderlein.
Translation quality and accuracy enhancements
API users can now access higher-quality translations, saving even more time on translating and editing. This improvement comes from DeepL’s new language model, which uses advanced AI and proprietary technology designed for translation.
Blind tests conducted with leading linguists found a remarkable 1.7x improvement with the new LLM against DeepL’s old model for combinations involving English to Japanese and Simplified Chinese; and a 1.4x improvement for the combination of English and German.
In 2024, more tests found that DeepL’s new model delivers higher-quality translations than its competitors.
DeepL’s translations require fewer edits than competitors, with Google Translate needing 2x more edits and ChatGPT-4 needing 3x more edits to achieve the same quality.
“In terms of real-world applications, the DeepL API can be effortlessly integrated alongside other AI tools, fitting seamlessly into existing workflows and providing an accessible experience across multiple platforms,” says DeepL’s spokesperson to Silicon Canals.
The DeepL API powered by the next-gen language model is now available for translations in English, Japanese, German, Korean, and Simplified Chinese, with additional languages coming soon.
New writing and editing capabilities
DeepL Write is now available to API users alongside DeepL Translate. It helps businesses improve their writing quality.
Unlike basic AI tools that generate text or fix grammar, DeepL Write provides real-time suggestions on word choice, phrasing, style, and tone while drafting.
This tool aims to improve how professionals create content, making internal communications and external messages more accurate and clear.
“In industries like e-commerce, for example, companies can use the API to enhance product descriptions, customer-facing messages, and marketing copy, ensuring consistent quality and tone across multiple languages. The tool not only streamlines localisation processes but also boosts proofreader productivity and reduces operational costs,”
“By going beyond basic grammar tools and offering creative writing assistance, the API empowers knowledge workers to focus on high-value tasks while maintaining precision and professionalism,”
DeepL API for Write is also now available in German, English (British & US), Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese (Portuguese & Brazilian).
DeepL API Pro users are also protected by enterprise-grade security and compliance standards and no translations for API Pro accounts are ever used to train its models.
Providing accurate translation at scale
Currently, numerous brands across a variety of industries, like Deutsche Bahn, Weglot, Panasonic Connect, 24Translate, and Alza use DeepL API.
“Our API has been adopted by brands like Deutsche Bahn and Panasonic Connect largely due to its unparalleled translation accuracy and ability to support seamless communication in complex, high-stakes environments,” says DeepL spokesperson.
“DeepL’s API addresses these challenges by minimising translation errors and providing accurate translation at scale, even in specialised or rapidly evolving fields like AI, where new advancements emerge weekly,” adds the spokesperson.
Focusing on DeepL Voice
Last year, the company launched its first voice translation solution DeepL Voice, with two products — Voice for Meetings and Voice for Conversations.
“With the recent launch of DeepL Voice, we’ve entered an exciting new chapter in breaking down language barriers through real-time speech translation.”
Translating spoken language comes with challenges like incomplete input, pronunciation variations, and delays, which can lead to misunderstandings.
“To address these issues, we developed DeepL Voice – a solution designed from the ground up to tackle these complexities, empowering businesses to overcome language barriers and communicate effortlessly across multiple languages,” says the spokesperson.
