Munich-based Emidat, a company that offers environmental data solutions for the construction industry, has secured €4M in a seed round of funding led by General Catalyst.
This funding will help Emidat improve how building materials are labeled to help the construction industry lower its impact on the environment. It will also allow Emidat to expand its platform, speed up product development, and grow its team.
Samuel Beyer, Investor at General Catalyst, says, “We see Emidat as a turnkey solution for decarbonising the mission-critical built environment from the ground up; it will increasingly function as a collaborative platform where the industry can collectively access and exchange material data.”
“We believe this will help drive the speed of industry transformation and value chain efficiency.”
The operating system for environmental data
The EU will soon implement mandatory standards for building product declarations, and Emidat is creating a system to manage environmental data in construction.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are labels that detail the environmental impact of materials throughout their life cycles, helping architects and builders make informed material choices. Currently, creating EPDs is an expensive and complicated process for the industry.
Lisa Oberaigner, CEO and co-founder of Emidat, says, “Buildings are where we live, work and learn – they are at the heart of all productive economies. While we make progress in decarbonising the energy sector, construction continues to have a huge and damaging impact on our planet.”
“Since 75 per cent of the buildings we will be using in 2050 are yet to be built, there is a huge opportunity to reduce the impact of this sector. By providing transparent and accessible environmental data, we can help decarbonise the industry and create a more sustainable built environment.”
Co-founded by Lisa Oberaigner and Florian Fesch in 2023, Emidat provides a data platform that integrates with existing workflows, accepting data through API, Excel, or BIM.
The platform hosts environmental data on over 150,000 construction products, accessible via API and user interface, enabling material manufacturers to create EPDs more efficiently, with over 70 per cent cost and time savings.
Emidat’s system supports increased transparency and sustainability efforts, aiming to save over 100 million metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually by 2030. Key clients include major global concrete manufacturers and leading European suppliers in the concrete, insulation, steel, and facade industries.
