Last update:

Netherlands-based Exasun, a company that develops and produces high-quality solar roof systems, announced on Thursday, September 15, that it has raised €9M in a fresh round of funding.

The company says the funds will be used to build a new PV assembly line at its current production site in The Hague and to fund further international expansion.

The current funding round came from ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund, Invest-NL, Wienerberger, and existing shareholders ENERGIIQ, Dockpoint and No Such Ventures.

Additional production capacity for BIPV expansion

According to market research, Building-Integrated PV systems (BIPV – Building Integrated Photo Voltaic) will expand globally by about 25 per cent yearly over the next ten years, reaching a market size of around €100B. At the end of 2021, Europe held a 43 per cent share of the global BIPV market.

The European Commission has made a clear commitment to increase PV output in Europe with the formation of the EU Solar PV Industry Alliance, and the US is also supporting renewable energy as part of the Inflation Reduction Act 2022. All the signs point to a rapid energy transition in which BIPV is significant.

Exasun says it produces robust BIPV solutions with a high aesthetic value that waterproof roofs, generate energy, and are quick and easy to install.

Remon Veraart, CEO of Exasun, says, “The expansion of BIPV in Europe and beyond requires additional production capacity and this capital injection will allow us to build a completely new PV assembly line at our current production site in The Hague.”

A high-quality solar roof systems

Heat pumps and electric vehicles utilise an increasing amount of power. By making better use of available roof space, Exasun’s in-roof solar systems produce more energy than conventional on-roof systems.

Founded in 2012 by Michiel Mensink and Jan Jaap van Os, Exasun claims to accelerate sustainability through innovations that lower the costs of solar power through the use of local production and suppliers, and through better aesthetics.

The company produces glass-glass solar panels with high efficiency and long life in its own production line in The Hague. It has developed its advanced production line in recent years in cooperation with suppliers, knowledge institutions, and renowned Dutch machine builders.

Additionally, the company also produces modules with special dimensions for building-integrated applications.

Besides BIPV panels for a waterproof PV roof (X-Roof), Exasun produces panels for ‘between roof’ tiles (X-Tile). Both systems can be equipped with patented color technology for optimal and seamless integration into new and existing roofs.

Cooperation with Wienerberger

Since 2015, Exasun claims to be at the leading the growth of the Dutch market for building-integrated PV solutions. Due to its success in the Netherlands and its strategic partnership with Wienerberger, the firm has now expanded to the rest of Europe with products made in The Hague.

Since January 1, 2022,  Wienerberger, a leading producer of ceramic building solutions, has been managing all European sales and distribution of Exasun products. The Wienerberger Wevolt energy roof, which is being implemented throughout all of Europe, includes the X-Roof and X-Tile products. Over a thousand households have the systems successfully installed.
