Istanbul-based Getir, an instant grocery delivery company, announced on Wednesday that it has acquired FreshDirect, a New York City-based online grocery delivery company from Ahold Delhaize USA, the largest grocery retail group on the East Coast.
The deal is expected to be closed within this month.
The announcement comes a few months after Getir decided to withdraw its operations from Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
After the closing of the acquisition, FreshDirect will retain its brand name and operate out of its facility in the Bronx, New York City. Customers of both FreshDirect and Getir will continue to receive the same level of service as before.

Acquisition’s purpose

With access to Getir’s advanced technology and operational footprint, FreshDirect will provide faster services to its customers, who will also benefit from the convenience of Getir’s quick delivery service.
Additionally, FreshDirect will allow Getir to expand its fresh product range, making it more attractive to New York customers.
