Berlin-based GIGA.GREEN, a company developing and operating solar and charging infrastructure, has completed a €30M revolving capital expenditure facility with Kommunalkredit Austria AG.

The funding will enable the company to expand its decentralised photovoltaic infrastructure and advance its zero-investment solar-as-a-service model for businesses with high energy consumption.

The proceeds will be directed toward extending GIGA.GREEN’s project pipeline across Germany and enhancing the scalability of its operations.

Investors supporting GIGA.GREEN

GIGA.GREEN has entered into a financing agreement with Kommunalkredit Austria AG, a specialist bank headquartered in Vienna.

Kommunalkredit Austria AG focuses on funding infrastructure projects that promote sustainable development across Europe. Its portfolio includes initiatives in renewable energy, environmental protection, social services, transport, and communications.

Through the new facility, Kommunalkredit continues its role in advancing Europe’s transition toward sustainable and decentralised energy systems.

The partnership with GIGA.GREEN aligns with Kommunalkredit’s strategy of supporting projects that expand access to renewable power and strengthen local energy resilience.

David Wagener, head of finance at GIGA.GREEN, says, “We would like to thank Kommunalkredit for the excellent cooperation and for seeing and supporting our vision. This financing solution is tailored to our needs and supports us in implementing our projects efficiently and sustainably.”

Access to decentralised solar energy in Germany

Germany’s industrial sector is under pressure to lower emissions while maintaining cost efficiency. Decentralised renewable energy is becoming a key part of this transition, yet many companies face challenges due to limited expertise, high initial costs, and complex regulations.

GIGA.GREEN operates a model that addresses these challenges. The company manages the planning, financing, installation, and operation of solar systems on the rooftops of its clients. Businesses lease their roof space to GIGA.GREEN and, in return, gain access to long-term, low-cost solar power without the need for upfront capital.

Founded in 2018 by Sebastian Schmidt and Wolfgang Robig, GIGA.GREEN converts unused roof areas into energy-producing assets for commercial and industrial users.

In addition to solar systems, the company provides battery and charging infrastructure solutions to support broader energy transformation efforts.

GIGA.GREEN’s goal is to collaborate with partners across Germany to develop a decentralised solar network that contributes to emission reduction and long-term energy independence.

Earlier this year, in July, the company secured €25M in equity from Ichigo Inc., a Japanese sustainable infrastructure company.

Capital utilisation

The new revolving capital facility enables GIGA.GREEN to use funds in line with its project and revenue timelines. This will help the company finance projects as they progress and recover capital through ongoing operations.

By doing so, GIGA.GREEN can expand its solar-as-a-service activities, increase the number of photovoltaic systems under management, and contribute to lowering industrial emissions in Germany and across Europe.

Wolfgang Robig, co-founder and MD of GIGA.GREEN says, “This fund represents another significant step in the company’s mission to develop and operate solar and charging infrastructure and partner with commercial and industrial customers to jointly save one gigaton (1 billion tons) of CO2.”

“With this funding, GIGA.GREEN will be able to accelerate its Germany-wide project portfolio, focusing on photovoltaic systems on industrial roofs. The Germany-based company will use the capital to help more businesses gain access to clean, affordable electricity without upfront investment.”

“We are proud to make this important contribution to decarbonisation together with our team and customers. Our goal at GIGA.GREEN is to create a way for companies to improve their sustainability as easily as possible,” adds Wolfgang.
