Last update:

Stockholm-based Exeger, a startup that transforms any form of light into electrical power through its solar cell technology Powerfoyle, has acquired Amsterdam-based Intivation BV, a company that develops and manufactures solar-powered mobile phones, chargers, and battery packs.

The acquisition will secure a key component, strengthening the ecosystem around Powerfoyle and ensuring optimal system output, allowing it to provide more power to devices.

“Mobilising the sun”

Founded in 2003, Intivation is a semiconductor company. It develops and markets proprietary SunBoost technology that increases the power output of solar cells.

Intivation partners with semiconductor manufacturer EM Microelectronic, a Swatch Group company, to manufacture its chipset.

Its solutions are applied in consumer electronics like mobile phones, chargers, RC’s, or keyboards, accessories like watches and charging cradles, lighting, and smart grid applications like wireless standalone sensors and transmitters.

Aim of the acquisition

Intivation BV will become a fully owned subsidiary of Exeger Operations AB. The acquisition ensures that one of the key electronic components in the solar cell charging system is of high quality and fully optimised for Powerfoyle. As a result, customers are now provided with the highest standard electronics package, offering an efficient output to the battery from Powerfoyle.

Anne Osinga, CEO & founder of Intivation, explains, “Powerfoyle makes seamless integration of solar cells possible for the very first time. Users can have a truly wireless experience of consumer electronics with clean endless energy without any constraints to design; it simply works. Intivation’s technology ensures the constant optimal output of Powerfoyle for the highest possible charge current, and that’s why the combination of these two technologies is so promising.”

In 2021, Exeger teamed up with various partners to form a strong ecosystem around Powerfoyle, providing a superior experience for end-users and facilitating integration and adoption for customers.

The partnerships that have been announced so far include Qualcomm – to provide a ready-made solution with a power-efficient Bluetooth chipset paired with Powerfoyle for use in wireless headphones; OSM Group – to support customers with the design, development, production, and seamless integration of Powerfoyle; and Mayht – to create a new standard platform for brands in the speaker industry.

Giovanni Fili, CEO and founder of Exeger, adds, “Sustainability in the twenty-first century needs to centre around an ecosystem mindset. We have set out to partner with the companies that improve our core technology the most and Exeger’s ownership of Intivation is a natural development of our longstanding relationship.”

“It will ensure Exeger can offer the most suitable power solution to all our customers, to know there will be a key component which is solely optimised for Powerfoyle and always available for purchase. When the opportunity arose, we all felt this partnership was poised to help accelerate the mass adoption of Powerfoyle and touch the lives of a billion people by 2030,” adds Fili.

Solar cell technology

Deep tech company Exeger (formelry NLAB Solar) is singularly focused on the development and commercialisation of new materials enhancing efficiency in solar cells. The company has developed a solar cell technology – Powerfoyle, that can convert all forms of light into electrical power.

Powerfoyle also enables the charging of electronic products through daylight and indoor lighting. “Powerfoyle has been brought to market after more than a decade of scientific research and industry development,” says the company.

It is made up of a completely new type of patented nanomaterial, with production entirely carried out in the company’s factory in Stockholm. The material converts any light to electrical energy, in a process inspired by the natural principle of photosynthesis. It can be applied to an endless range of areas due to its pliable and flexible nature, says the company.

Exeger claims to make products both smarter and more sustainable – with the vision to touch the everyday lives of billions of people. In May, the Stockholm-based company raised $20M (approx €16.4M) in debt financing from Swedbank and Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK).
