Last update:

Delft-based MEMSYS, a company developing technologies and applications for self-powered devices, has secured undisclosed pre-seed investment from the Graduate Entrepreneur Fund and a group of angel investors.

Dutch-based Graduate Entrepreneur aims to stimulate the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Rotterdam and Delft.

Graduate Entrepreneur is an initiative of a group of influential and merited alumni of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus MC, and the Delft University of Technology.

” Memsys tackles a major industrial challenge: traditional sensors rely on batteries, which require frequent replacements, leading to downtime, maintenance costs, and significant battery waste. By harvesting energy from machine vibrations, Memsys not only reduces operational inefficiencies but also eliminates the environmental impact of batteries,” says Graduate Entrepreneur in a LinkedIn post.

The announcement comes a couple of years after raising €350K from the UNIIQ Fund.

The company will use the funds to expand its team of mechanical engineers and advance fundamental research, prototyping, and product development.

The company will also use the capital to collaborate with industrial IoT partners to integrate and deploy innovative solutions.

What does MEMSYS solve?

In industrial settings, condition monitoring sensors typically rely on batteries to track machine performance and maintenance needs.

Replacing these batteries leads to high costs, production downtime, and significant environmental impact.

Here’s where MEMSYS comes into play!

The company provides a scalable and sustainable alternative by converting machine vibrations into energy, allowing sensors to operate continuously without battery replacements.

MEMSYS: Powering efficiency

MEMSYS, a spin-off from the Delft University of Technology, was founded in 2022 by Thijs Blad, with Philip Seijgar and Hugo Romer joining later. The company aims to develop technology and apps for self-powered gadgets.

The Dutch company has developed an advanced vibration energy harvesting technology — MEMSYS Quartz Technology that provides industrial sensors with a continuous energy source.

The technology is built on kinetic energy harvesting, drawing power from motion and vibrations to fuel industrial wireless electronics.

By converting machine vibrations into electricity, the Dutch company eliminates the need for battery replacements while significantly enhancing sensor performance.

With this self-sustaining power source, sensors can collect data more frequently and with greater accuracy, allowing companies to optimise maintenance strategies and prevent unexpected failures.

“We see it as our mission to work on the next step, which is to power the billions of wireless devices that don’t have access to such sources, but instead rely on the soon-to-become legacy technology: discardable batteries,” says the company.
