Last update:

Berlin-based legal-tech startup Noxtua SE, previously Xayn, has completed a Series B funding round of approximately €80.7M.

The round was led by Germany’s legal publisher C.H.Beck, with new investors including HPC specialist Northern Data, business law firm CMS, and global law firm Dentons.

This investment brings together expertise in AI, law, and computing, supporting Noxtua’s role in the legal technology sector in Europe.

Besides the funding, Noxtua and C.H.Beck are launching the integrated Legal AI workspace “Beck-Noxtua”. The platform combines Noxtua’s AI technology with C.H.Beck’s legal database.

Aroosh Thillainathan, Founder and CEO of Northern Data Group, says, “We empower the world’s most innovative companies – not just through our technology, but also by fostering the ecosystems that spark groundbreaking ideas.”

“Our strategic investment acknowledges how Xayn/Noxtua successfully combines cutting-edge AI applications, fine-tuned LLMs, proprietary databases, and powerful compute resources—all within our sovereign, legally compliant AI infrastructure. We are excited to support Xayn’s/Noxtua’s continued growth as they scale to meet the growing demand for Legal AI.”

Capital utilisation

Noxtua, developer of Europe’s first sovereign Legal AI, plans to use the funding to expand its product offering and enter new markets.

The company was founded on research from Oxford University and Imperial College London and is expanding into new European markets and establishing additional headquarters. This move supports its goal of operating as a European AI company.

Previous investors, including Global Brain Corporation, KDDI Open Innovation Fund, CMS, and Dominik Schiener, continue to support the company. Schiener and C.H. Beck have acquired the shares of former investor Earlybird VC as part of the company’s new strategy.

Noxtua complies with professional confidentiality laws, including sections of the German Criminal Code and the Federal Code for Lawyers, allowing use without anonymising sensitive information.

Dr Leif-Nissen Lundbæk, CEO & co-founder of Xayn/Noxtua, says, “We are delighted about the successfully completed financing round and the new strong partners by our side – especially now, when Europe’s digital sovereignty is more crucial than ever. European digital sovereignty is not merely a political question, but one that must also be addressed with hard technical facts – which is why the successful Series B round is of high strategic relevance to us.”

“With C.H.Beck, Northern Data, CMS, and Dentons as our new investors, we are bringing together a unique combination of AI, legal, and computing expertise. This enables us to expand our position as the leading sovereign Legal AI in Europe. In doing so, we are also continuing the journey we began in 2017: building powerful AI based on European values,” adds Lundbæk.

How will the investors support Noxtua?

Noxtua uses proprietary AI models trained on legal data, and through a partnership with C.H.Beck, it accesses one of the largest legal databases in the German-speaking region. This includes more than 55 million documents used to develop and improve the Legal AI.

C.H.Beck delivers content through beck-online, which includes legal publications, journals, and commentary literature. This data helps train Noxtua’s AI to support legal professionals in researching, analysing, and drafting legal documents in compliance with legal and data protection requirements.

The AI, developed in Berlin with roots in academic research from the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, was created with support from CMS.

The investment in Noxtua SE reflects a broader effort to strengthen European control over key technologies. Strategic investor Northern Data adds expertise in European high-performance computing and hosting. This infrastructure supports the operation and scaling of AI models within European digital frameworks.

Together, C.H.Beck, CMS, Dentons, and Northern Data contribute legal content, market access, regulatory alignment, and computing power. C.H.Beck will distribute the AI solutions in Germany and other regions, supporting Noxtua’s integration into legal markets and advancing Europe’s goal of digital autonomy.

Professor Dr Klaus Weber, member of the Executive Board at C.H.Beck, says, “The connection between Noxtua and C.H.Beck publishing house is far more than the combination of leading legal specialist information with outstanding technology. Noxtua’s vision of a sovereign European Legal AI aligns hand in hand with our values as an independent family-owned company, bearing a special responsibility towards the legal system.”

Dr Oliver Hofmann, Head of Legal Tech at the publishing house, adds, “This carefully selected partnership with Noxtua is a cornerstone of our innovation strategy. Together, we will further expand our portfolio of AI solutions. In the future, we will offer our customers not only high-quality content and research capabilities but also comprehensive productivity solutions for their legal work.”
