Last update:

Delft-based Orange Quantum Systems, a quantum technology company, secured fresh funding from InnovationQuarter, a firm that helps entrepreneurs in South Holland to develop and market technological innovations.

Dutch-based InnovationQuarter joins previous investors Cottonwood Technology Fund and QDNL Participations.

Erik van der Zant, Head of Investing at InnovationQuarter, says, “Orange Quantum Systems is a perfect example of a company that InnovationQuarter is happy to support. Complex, high-tech and crucial for the positioning of the Dutch quantum ecosystem.”

“To deliver a system that reduces testing costs per qubit, Orange QS is building its supply chain with top European component suppliers, some of which are based in South Holland. In this way, Orange Quantum Systems accelerates the development of quantum chips and occupies an important position in the global quantum value chain.”

Delivering test equipment for better quantum chips

Orange Quantum Systems (OrangeQS) helps the quantum chip industry shift from lab prototypes to mass production by cutting testing costs and accelerating development.

According to OrangeQS, quantum chips are nearing the point of surpassing traditional supercomputers, but testing remains the “biggest” bottleneck. Rapid testing machines are crucial for accelerating the development of new generations of quantum chips, allowing for faster production in larger volumes.

OrangeQS is the world’s first company to offer a ready-made and affordable testing alternative for quantum chip builders, distinguishing itself in an industry where in-house development is prevalent.

OrangeQS is building its supply chain. Garrelt Alberts, MD at OrangeQS, says, “InnovationQuarter supports us because of our unique position in the quantum industry value chain and our development of high-throughput quantum chip testing equipment.”

“After decades of investments in the South Holland region, the Delft quantum ecosystem has several top suppliers for quantum chip testing equipment. We therefore also have a coordinating role in the region, aligning our global and local supply chains to deliver innovative, high-quality and reliable products.”

Brief about OrangeQS

Founded in 2020 as a spin-off of TNO and QuTech, OrangeQS claims to emerge as a leading system integrator in Europe’s quantum industry.

In 2023, the company secured €1.5M from QDNL Participations and Cottonwood Technology Fund, alongside the EIC Accelerator grant from the European Innovation Council.

By spring 2024, OrangeQS announced the sale of its first test equipment for larger quantum chips to a leading quantum computer builder. This system can test 100+ qubit quantum chips within a week.

Additionally, the company also inaugurated a new production facility in Delft for assembling and testing these industrial systems.

OrangeQS is also a participant in the ImpaQT project, a collaboration in South Holland involving six private parties dedicated to advancing quantum computing.

This investment, supported by InnovationQuarter’s business development efforts, aims to foster collaboration across the quantum computing value chain.

What’s next?

In 2024, OrangeQS is set to formally introduce its testing equipment for the quantum industry as a product.

To sustain its position in the global quantum industry, the company is ramping up its team, manufacturing facilities, and R&D efforts, while also broadening its customer base worldwide.
