Netherlands-based Quantum Delta NL, the public-private foundation, announced on Monday, that it has opened the first location of the House of Quantum, in Delft.
According to a statement, the House of Quantum is to become the world’s first national quantum campus consisting of several multi-tenant buildings for quantum companies across the Netherlands.
In April, Quantum Delta NL’s growth programme was awarded €615M from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy to power the advancement of quantum technology.
What does House of Quantum offer?
House of Quantum provides memberships to local and international companies, investors and researchers to work, meet and collaborate on tomorrow’s quantum technology as well as grow their business.
The building was formally inaugurated by the Dutch Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Micky Adriaansens, during a event that was attended by, among others, the Special Envoy for Techleap.nl, Constantijn van Oranje, founders, investors, and educational institutions like TU Delft.
As a separate project, House of Quantum is an effort by Quantum Delta NL to broaden the tech ecosystem, foster collaborations between the entire body of knowledge centred on the major Dutch knowledge institutions and between quantum hardware and software and attract non-technical stakeholders who can help the national quantum ecosystem.
Freeke Heijman, co-founder and director ecosystems of Quantum Delta NL, says, “With these investments, we are building a national quantum campus that connects to partner locations in Europe. Each location will have its specific footprint, reflecting the needs of the local quantum players in each hub. The first two locations in Delft (just down the street from the TU Delft Campus) are mainly geared towards startups working on hardware developments and related electronics. It offers plug-and-play fridges, workstations, modular office space, meeting facilities and a members-only Mediterranean-style restaurant. Related initiatives from across the Quantum Delta NL programme will also find their way into the building.”
Shahar Graf, operational lead of House of Quantum, adds, “We’re still in the early days, but we can’t wait to see the first building flourish and to support the exciting quantum initiatives throughout the ecosystem such as the Centre for Quantum & Society, training and learning centres and field lab projects.”
First to join, and currently sharing a building, are Orange Quantum Systems, Qblox, Quantware, and QphoX, all graduates of the nearby Delft quantum cluster.
A national quantum campus
According to Quantum Delta NL, the businesses developing the technologies in this developing phase of the quantum economy require offices and top-notch lab facilities, which are sometimes too expensive to construct separately. The government is making investments around the nation as part of the national quantum technology initiative, which is overseen by Quantum Delta NL, notably in Eindhoven, Amsterdam, and Twente.
The first site in Delft is officially up for business and two more will follow, starting with a building on the same premises in 2023. Between 2023 and 2026, further locations will follow.
Workspaces and top-notch labs and testbeds for quantum computing, quantum networks, and quantum sensing will be housed in the main building alone, which is dubbed Europe’s smartest 12,000 square “quantum metres”. This location will be created by the engineering companies Deerns and Aronsohn and the architecture company Cepezed, and it will debut in 2025.
NL as a quantum leader in the EU and globally
Now that the first House of Quantum site is operational, foreign startups, SMEs, and businesses may also sign up to become members. In addition to setting up offices or laboratories, businesses may also participate through coworking and community memberships. There are also chances for bigger businesses who want to participate to sponsor the House of Quantum.
Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Micky Adriaansens, says, “Quantum technology is a promising field of technology and the Netherlands has world-leading research facilities. Now is the time to convert our academic lead into economic activity. Fruitful public-private cooperation like The House of Quantum plays a central role in this process. Here, all blood groups and disciplines from the ecosystem come together to accelerate the application of quantum technology.”
Brief about Quantum Delta NL
Quantum Delta NL is a public-private partnership of global tech companies, government agencies, and all major quantum research centres in the Netherlands. The firm is kicking off three ambitious catalyst programmes designed to accelerate the process of introducing quantum technology to the market and to society.
Its aim is to provide easy access to quantum networks, computers and simulators, lowering the threshold for development and testing. The programmes have a cohesive function, bringing together the various technologies and action lines, various ecosystem actors, and the scientific and user communities.
