Germany’s AI-powered drone-robotics firm Quantum Systems secures €63.6M

Bayern-based Quantum Systems, a company that develops, manufactures and sells AI-powered drone-robotics, announced on Tuesday, October 24, that it has raised €63.6M in a Series B round of funding. This brings the company’s total funding to over €100M.

This milestone makes Quantum Systems the first European company to raise such a significant amount in the field of dual-use technology. 

Quantum Systems aims to enhance resilient infrastructure through its advanced aerial intelligence solutions for both government and commercial clients.

Investors in this round

The round was led by HV Capital and DTCP, followed by Project A, Thiel Capital, ScaleUp Fonds Bayern, Omnes Capital, and Airbus Ventures.

Brief about Quantum Systems

In 2011, Florian Seibel and Dr. Michael Kriegel, who met during their PhD work, patented a vertically launchable unmanned transition aircraft. They were joined by Tobias Kloss and Armin Busse, founding Quantum Systems in 2015. Currently, three of the four founders remain active in the company.

Quantum Systems specialises in small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS).

The company says, “Our sUAS fly as efficiently as a fixed-wing aeroplane but allow for the easy vertical take-off and landing like a multi-rotor drone. No runway and no extra equipment are needed for take-off or landing. They land smoothly, controlled by their shock-absorbing landing gear. This means reduced harm to the sUAS and sensors for extended product life.”

Quantum Systems’ electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) drones are crafted for enhanced range, adaptability, and user-friendly interfaces, emphasising ease of operation for operators.

For clients in the European defence, security, public safety, commercial, and geospatial industries, the company is developing next-generation UAS that offer software features, including edge computing and real-time AI-powered data processing.

These drones empower clients to conduct diverse operations, such as search and rescue efforts post-natural disasters, automated railway inspections following adverse weather conditions, and gathering aerial data intelligence for large-scale construction projects.

The need for technological autonomy

Quantum Systems says that in response to escalating global challenges, it is enhancing commercial and government capabilities with robust data advantage systems. 

The company recently secured a major contract with the German Armed Forces for Vector reconnaissance drones, bolstering European security. 

Teaming up with Airbus Defence and Space, and supported by the German Ministry of Defense, Quantum Systems is advancing tactical drones through AI and swarming technologies. 

The company is actively aiding Ukraine by delivering Vector drones, pushing the boundaries of AI, endurance, and system integration for battle management systems. 

Quantum Systems is driven by a global vision in AI-powered drone-robotics, focusing on a cohesive “family of systems” approach, unified software stacks, and Drone Ports development to maintain a technological edge in autonomous aerial data capture.

In October 2022, Quantum Systems delivered the first VECTOR systems to the Dutch Ministry of Defense (MoD), together with BSS Holland.
