TechCrunch now has a new owner!

Yahoo, on Friday, agreed to sell its 20-year-old technology news website, TechCrunch, to California-based media investment firm Regent.

The deal for TechCrunch is expected to close in the coming weeks. Terms were not disclosed.

In a LinkedIn post, Matt Burns, Editorial Director, and Co-founder, expressed that the platform’s future will likely look very different from the one he considered home for 16 years.

“Over the past 18 months, TC lost a huge chunk of its long-time leadership and editorial team. Half were laid off (like me), and the rest walked,” says Burns.

The announcement came a day after Regent acquired Foundry, the home of PCWorld, Macworld, InfoWorld, CIO, TechAdvisor, and other leading tech publications.

The deal brings together two publishers known for high-impact technology journalism, says Regent.

In a statement, Yahoo says, “TechCrunch has consistently stood out as a distinguished component of Yahoo’s portfolio, renowned for its original reporting, incisive analysis, and comprehensive industry coverage, distinct from our broader focus on news aggregation and innovative tools for users. We believe this next chapter under Regent can help maintain TechCrunch’s influence and support its continued growth. Yahoo looks forward to a continued collaboration with Regent and TechCrunch, built upon a long-term partnership focused on expanding audience reach, fostering innovative content development, and creating mutual financial growth.”

Regent is a global investment firm focused on acquiring businesses across diverse sectors, including retail, luxury, media, technology, automotive, and industrial.

It’s selected investments include Bally, DIM, Club Monaco, Escada, Nur Die, La Senza, Sassoon, Lydech, Boundless Learning, DiamondBack, Redline, DryBar, Lillian Vernon, and a media portfolio comprised of newspapers and magazines including Sunset, Defense News, Military Times and broadcaster CheddarTV.

Regent says, “We’re excited to bring TechCrunch and Foundry into our portfolio. TechCrunch has been the number one publisher for all things startups since its founding in 2005, and we’re thrilled to expand its reach as it provides breaking technology news, opinions, and analysis on tech companies worldwide to our audience.”
