Delft-based SLAM Orthopedic, a Dutch medical device company developing advanced sensor systems for surgical applications, announced that it has secured €2M in a seed round of funding.
The investment was led by the Dutch seed fund Rising Star Venture Partners, with support from individual investors and the Zeeuws Participatiefonds.
Capital utilisation
The raised funds will be used to finalise the development of SLAM Orthopedic’s flagship product, the ADEPTH system, designed for orthopedic and trauma surgeries.
This sensor system helps surgeons accurately measure and select the appropriate implant size for patients with fractures, enhancing efficiency during trauma surgery, improving patient care quality, and reducing surgical waste.
Just Schornagel, CEO of SLAM Orthopedic, says, “We believe the best way to support surgeons’ capabilities is by automating tedious and precise tasks while allowing maximum flexibility.”
“We developed the ADEPTH system with this goal in mind and in close collaboration with surgeons. This investment allows us to certify and commercialise it. We look forward to grow the company and transform trauma surgery with this group of experienced investors.”
Enhancing surgery through technology
Founded in 2017 by Just Schornagel, Bart Kölling and Bas de Hartog, SLAM Orthopedic focuses on a common issue in fracture surgery: ensuring the right size for each screw implant to avoid instability and potential harm to tissues or joints.
Manual sizing is the current method. However, it’s slow and prone to errors, leading to patient complications and wasted implants. SLAM Orthopedic’s solution, the ADEPTH sensor, automates this crucial process.
Compatible with all drill machines, it enables contactless measurement, fitting into surgeons’ existing workflows and equipment, offering efficiency and accuracy.
The ADEPTH system is currently undergoing validation in its first human clinical trial, conducted in collaboration with the trauma surgery department at ErasmusMC, the Netherlands’ largest trauma center.
SLAM Orthopedic anticipates introducing the ADEPTH system to the European market by mid-2025.
Benjamin Sieters, Fund Manager at Rising Star Venture Partners, says, “We fully support SLAM Ortho’s vision and see ADEPTH as a valuable solution for a crucial step in the surgical workflow. The investors, as well as the clinical and commercial partners, have confidence in this team and look forward to bringing the ADEPTH system to the next level.”
