Sundar Pichai made Alphabet CEO as Google co-founders leave the company

Google has never been one of the conventional tech companies we keep hearing about all the time. After massive restructuring in 2015, the company is again changing its leadership structure as its original co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin bid adieu to the control they held over Alphabet, Google’s parent company. The current CEO of the company, Sundar Pichai will be taking over, while the co-founders will still remain as an employee and retain their board seats. 

An open letter from Larry and Sergey

The departure of Google co-founders doesn’t really come as a surprise for those who are up to date with what’s happening with the company. Ever since Alphabet was formed, Page and Brin have been actively involved with the company but their public appearances were rather limited. As the CEO, Sundar Pichai became the public face of the company and went on to run the company and represent it in times of turmoil. 

In a blog post, the Google founders write, “With Alphabet now well-established, and Google and the Other Bets operating effectively as independent companies, it’s the natural time to simplify our management structure. We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President. Going forward, Sundar will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet.” 

“He will be the executive responsible and accountable for leading Google, and managing Alphabet’s investment in our portfolio of Other Bets. We are deeply committed to Google and Alphabet for the long term, and will remain actively involved as Board members, shareholders and co-founders. In addition, we plan to continue talking with Sundar regularly, especially on topics we’re passionate about.”

What’s next?

As the CEO, Pichai is expected to take Alphabet and its bets forward and says that the transition won’t affect the current Alphabet structure or the day to day work. “ I will continue to be very focused on Google and the deep work we’re doing to push the boundaries of computing and build a more helpful Google for everyone. At the same time, I’m excited about Alphabet and its long term focus on tackling big challenges through technology.” says Pichai.
