Zurich-based DeepJudge, a legal AI startup, announced on Tuesday, June 18, that it has secured $10M (approximately €9.3M) in an oversubscribed seed funding round led by Coatue, with participation from notable angel investors such as Gokul Rajaram, Michele Catasta, and others.

The Swiss company will use the funds to accelerate its expansion to enhance team and infrastructure.

Many law firms and legal departments rely on curated documents as their main source of institutional knowledge, including legal briefs, agreement templates, and clause libraries.

While curated archives are valuable, they can’t address all challenges.

As a result, a comprehensive search function is crucial for finding unique client-specific language variations.

AI-powered search offers new possibilities, such as identifying trends and business opportunities across the client base.

Here’s where DeepJudge steps in.

The Swiss company aims to make legal teams more informed and proactive, envisioning real-time alerts for emerging practice issues.

DeepJudge: Helping legal professionals with knowledge management

Founded in 2021 by Paulina Grnarova, Yannic Kilcher, and Kevin Roth, DeepJudge is an AI-powered Knowledge Search that helps legal professionals instantly locate relevant content across the enterprise, including document management systems, the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, and other tools.

The company’s proprietary search technology utilises intent-based, permission-aware ranking to deliver the most accurate search results for legal documents.

The Knowledge Search comprehensively ingests work products, briefs, memos, client communication, and other document types in all common file formats and makes them available in a single, unified interface.

The company also provides a DeepJudge Knowledge Assistant, a generative AI interface for law firms and legal departments powered by the institutional knowledge contained within all of a firm’s documents.

DeepJudge Knowledge Assistant uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology to provide the most relevant, up-to-date information, ensuring high-quality answers are grounded in each organisation’s comprehensive internal knowledge base.

The investor

Based out of New York, Coatue invests in public and private equity markets focusing on the technology, media, and telecommunications industries.

“DeepJudge is one of the first products on a mission to empower legal teams to harness their internal data to make strategic decisions. From a technology standpoint, we are impressed by DeepJudge’s approach to solving data retrieval, which we believe is crucial to achieving high-quality generative results. We are excited to support DeepJudge as they seek to gain traction in the legal industry and grow their client base,” says, Caryn Marooney, General Partner at Coatue.
