The Dublin-based deep learning startup Artomatix has been acquired by Unity Technologies, which offers the widely-known cross-platform game engine Unity. The startupsโ primary offering is ArtEngine, which employs AI for scan- and example-based material-creation workflows, enabling studios to create 3D content at a rapid pace. With the acquisition, Unity will have a new and novel tool that will assist its developers in creating game environments.
Artomatix ArtEngine
ArtEngine is the flagship offering by Artomatix and as mentioned above it is a 3D content creation tool. It employs โCreative AIโ for scan- and example-based material-creation workflows and is claimed to be the software to do so.This approach enables ArtEngine to create digital worlds that are ultra-realistic. As per the company, the software helps artists focus on more creative work by taking off the burden of material creation work such as, deblur, seam removal, unwarping, up-resing, color matching, and more.
Unity and Artomatix
Artomatix launched back in 2015 and raised over โฌ10.7 million in grants and via VCs such as Suir Valley Ventures, Manifold Partners, enterprise Ireland, and Boost Heroes. Artomatixโs team will still operate from their Dublin offices and Unity has not yet revealed the acquisition price, reports TechCrunch.
Unity claims that over half of the latest games are being built using its game engine, which has been upgraded in recent years. Some hit game titles such as Cuphead, Ori and the Blind Forest and Inside were made with the Unity game engine. With Artomatixโs technology, Unityโs game engine can be expected to gain notable benefit since over the years, it has grown in complexity.
