Milan-based Bending Spoons, a provider of digital technology products, announced on Wednesday, July 31 that it has acquired WeTransfer, a digital file-sharing and collaboration platform.
As a part of the acquisition, the Italian company is pledging to donate at least $3M to The Supporting Act Foundation over the next two years.
The Foundation aims to support emerging artists and artist-led groups from under-represented communities.
Additionally, Bending Spoons is pledging to continue reserving 30 per cent of WeTransfer’s advertising space to give back campaigns and editorial content.
However, the company didn’t disclose any terms and conditions or financial details.
WeTransfer: File-sharing service
Founded by Bas Beerens, Nalden, and Damian Bradfield, WeTransfer is a computer file transfer service company.
Currently, the Dutch company powers 2 billion file transfers by 80 million active users each month. It’s funded by Highland Capital Partners and HPE Growth.
WeTransfer CEO, Alexandar Vassilev says, “Over the last decade, WeTransfer has grown from a beautifully simple file-sharing tool into a highly profitable and impactful platform trusted by millions of creative professionals and creators. In the last few years, the business has seen a period of accelerated growth, fueled by strategic product development, resulting in the platform serving more than 600,000 subscribers and 80 million monthly active users.”
“Additionally, nurturing creative communities and amplifying their voices has been key to our success. Some of Bending Spoons’ most successful products are tools that serve creativity, therefore we are confident that this milestone will complement both businesses, supercharge our growth, and help us create even more value for creative industries at large,” says Vassilev.
Bending Spoons: Digital product company
Founded in 2013 and led by Luca Ferrari, Bending Spoons has served a billion people through its suite of digital technology products, including Evernote, Meetup, Remini, StreamYard, and Splice.
The company’s products are currently used by more than 200 million people each month.
“When the possibility of acquiring WeTransfer presented itself, we moved swiftly to make it happen. There’s so much about WeTransfer that impresses us. First and foremost, it’s a terrific product that solves a real, widespread need—and does so better than most competitors. This provides a solid foundation to build upon, with plenty of potential to enhance WeTransfer’s usefulness even further. Additionally, the brand is extremely strong, particularly among creatives, which is no small achievement and offers great promise for the future,” says Luca Ferrari, co-founder and CEO, of Bending Spoons.
