What does SkillPanel do?
Led by Jakub Kubrynski, SkillPanel provides HR and L&D leaders with the visibility, insights, and tools they need to understand, build, and mobilise skills at scale.
The platform combines advanced skills mapping, 360° assessments, internal mobility, and a central hub for development activities, enabling companies to transition toward skills-based organisations with confidence.
The rebranding
According to the company, the rebranding comes at a crucial time for HR and L&D leaders as organisations transition from rigid job descriptions to skills-based models.
Skills are now vital for adapting to change and supporting employee career growth. The Polish company also emphasised the fact that skills are now recognised as the currency of work. As a result, it enables the companies to adapt quickly to changing demands and employees to pursue meaningful career growth.
Over 90 per cent of executives see skills-based approaches as essential for the future of work, but many organisations still lack the necessary tools to manage and measure skills effectively.
The rebrand to SkillPanel is not only about a new name but also about a renewed commitment to shaping the future of skills intelligence, claims the company.
In this edition of “What’s in a Name,” we spoke to SkillPanel’s CEO, Jakub Kubrynski, to learn more about the rebranding, mission, and the significance of a name in a startup’s success.
From DevSkiller to SkillPanel
The company’s original name, DevSkiller, was born more than a decade ago when its mission centred on real-world coding assessments for developers.
However, as the customer base grew, so did the platform’s scope.
Organisations wanted visibility into skills across the entire workforce, not just developers. The name SkillPanel was inspired by the idea of creating a central “control panel” for skills: a single place where businesses can see, manage, and act on skill data across their organisation,” says Jakub Kubrynski.
A name that mirrors the mission
SkillPanel was chosen not just for the name but as a direct reflection of the company’s vision — providing clarity into workforce capabilities.
“SkillPanel directly reflects our mission to bring clarity to workforce skills. Just as a cockpit panel provides a pilot with a complete view to navigate safely, SkillPanel provides leaders with a clear, data-driven picture of their workforce’s capabilities, helping them close skill gaps, support career growth, and future-proof their organisations,” adds Kubrynski.
A Careful Naming Process
The transition from DevSkiller to SkillPanel wasn’t rushed, confirms Kubrynski. The leadership team spent several months evaluating options, testing with customers, and aligning internally.
“The process involved balancing creativity with practicality. The name needed to resonate with HR and L&D leaders, be globally scalable, and clearly communicate our focus on skills intelligence,” he adds.
The team finalised “SkillPanel” since it was simple, memorable, and captured exactly what they provided as a solution.
The role of digital identity
In a time when online presence determines credibility, securing the appropriate domain was essential for the team.
“Domain availability was critical. A strong digital identity is essential for global growth, and we knew we needed a clean, recognisable domain to match our new brand. We secured skillpanel.com early in the process, which gave us confidence that this was the right direction,” adds Kubrynski.
Built for the long term
Unlike the company’s original name, the new name was designed with flexibility and long-term identity in mind.
“We see SkillPanel as a long-term identity. Unlike our original name, which tied us to one specific area of talent management, SkillPanel is broad enough to grow with us. Whether it is skills mapping, career development, or future workforce predictions, the name gives us the flexibility to expand while staying true to our mission,” adds Kubrynski.
Does a Name Define Success?
According to Kubrynski, a brand name is important but not solely responsible for achieving business growth.
“A name alone does not guarantee success, but it plays a vital role in shaping perception. It is often the first interaction someone has with your brand. For us, SkillPanel conveys clarity, focus, and modernity, values that align with how we want customers to experience our platform. Ultimately, a strong name supports a strong product and helps you tell your story more effectively,” he concludes.
