What’s in the Name: How Søren Berg and the Hybird Energy team created a name that mirrors their vision

Last update:

Copenhagen-based Hybird Energy has been in the headlines recently for securing €2.4M in funding from BackingMinds, Transition, and other existing investors.

The very company came into existence after its founders — Thomas Skovby, Søren Berg, and Morten Primdahl experienced frustration with traditional electricity monitoring, which did not provide detailed insights.

The result was Hybird Energy: an energy optimisation platform combining hardware and software to manage all building electricity remotely, yielding significant operational savings and CO2 reductions.

Welcome to our latest edition of the “What’s in the Name” series, where we dive into the origins and meanings behind some of the most intriguing startup names in the tech world.

This week, we spotlight the Danish startup Hybird Energy, which is transforming energy management through intelligent electrical panels powered by an AI energy cloud.

A name that mirrors the purpose with a twist

Initially, the company operated under the working title “Hybrid.”

The name was straightforward, representing the company’s blend of software and hardware designed to reduce excessive electrical consumption and carbon emissions.

“Hybrid was the working title of the company, until Johannes Torpe, a co-founder and head of design came up with the new name, a way of saying what we are,” says Søren Berg, co-founder of Hybird Energy.

Johannes suggested adding a twist by turning “Hybrid” into “Hybird.”

“It’s catchy and memorable, as a good name should be,” Søren explains.

Needed ‘energy’ in it

A crucial factor in solidifying the decision was the availability of the domain name hybird.energy.

“Hybird is focused on eliminating unnecessary electrical consumption, to lower emissions from CO2, thus having ‘energy’ in our domain name feels right,” he adds.

However, securing the domain was straightforward, and the process of trademarking the name didn’t pose any significant challenges either, clarifies Søren.

Role of naming in startup success

While Søren acknowledges that a name alone doesn’t guarantee a company’s success, he emphasises its importance.

“We believe it should be memorable and relevant. We check both boxes,” he says.

A good name can boost brand visibility, spark curiosity, and leave a lasting impression, which is an essential part of any startup that wants to stand out in a competitive market.

Looking to the future

“It’s not something we have spent time discussing at this point,” says Søren.

As Hybird continues to grow, the company is preparing to expand its portfolio of services to include water and heating management.

Søren says this expansion of the portfolio could lead to discussions about evolving the name, but the team hasn’t focused on that just yet.
