Utrecht-based Whoppah, a marketplace for secondhand design interior & art, announced that it has officially acquired the assets of Design Market, a marketplace specialising in interior design and home furniture.
Founded in 2014 by Lionel Obadia and David Mimouni, Design Market is dedicated to vintage and second-hand furniture that offers a trusted framework for purchasing unique pieces of furniture.
The company curates the offer of thousands of professional dealers – galleries and specialised antique dealers – located all over Europe that exclusively lists original vintage and second-hand furniture from the 1930s to the 2000s or more recently.
Benefits of this acquisition
With this acquisition, the Dutch platform is set to offer a 66 per cent increase in unique items, with organic traffic expected to surge by 75 per cent.
According to the company, Design Market’s acquisition will also lead to an immediate expansion of market share in key European countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as well as facilitate growth in Italy and Spain.
Additionally, the Dutch company has gained access to Design Market’s advanced global import and export tax calculation system, along with valuable partnerships with logistics providers, enhancing its ability to scale internationally.

Founded in 2019 by Thomas Bunnik and Evelien Remmelts, Whoppah is a marketplace for secondhand designer furniture, interior decor, and art.
In addition to renowned brands like Vitra, Artifort, and Cassina, unique sculptures and paintings by various artists are also available for purchase. Whoppah’s expertly curated selection ensures high quality, and their deliveries are handled with the utmost care by dedicated couriers.
The company’s mission is to accelerate the reuse of items already made.
By 2030, Whoppah aims to ensure that one million secondhand design items have found new homes, marking a significant milestone in sustainable consumer behaviour.
Back in May, the Dutch company appointed Gregory Kukolj as Chief Growth Officer.
Kukolj has held various top international positions at Heineken, Booking.com, and Marktplaats.nl, among others, is considered an authority on e-commerce and marketing.
