For the fourth consecutive year, at The Big Squeeze (formerly known as Tech Startup Day), Startups.be (together with Scale-Ups.eu) awarded the top Belgian startups in Brussels. Startups.be is a one-stop solution for Belgian tech entrepreneurs providing them with easy and qualitative access to customers, investors and experts. The Big Squeeze is a key event in Belgium on time squeezing for startups, scaleup, investors and corporates.
At the event, Bsit has been awarded โStartup of the Yearโ in Brussels. Spott has been awarded as the โBest scale-upโ, MicroFlavours has been crowned โStudent Startup of the Yearโ and e-peas becomes the most Disruptive Startup of the year.
These startups were awarded by a specialist jury comprising Omar Mohout (Sirris), Simon Alexandre (The Faktory), Benny Debruyne (Trends), Renaat Berckmoes (Fortino), Isabel Michiels (Agoria) and Thibaut Claes (SRIW). The shortlisted companies were grouped into four categories before selecting te winners.
Talking about the prizes, the winners get a free seat on one of Startups.be / Scale-Ups.eu GoGlobal missions, a fixed desk for 6 months at Becentral in Brussels, Huawei Mate 20 Pro devices, two years of expert hosting package from Combell, a seat the Belcham offices in New York for six months and more.
The Big Squeeze is powered by Huawei, DXC Technology, Innoviris, EY, Cresco, Exellys, PwC, Workero, DLA Piper and Beyond Law Firm. This event is supported by imec.iStart, WSL, Orange Fab, WATT Factory, The Birdhouse, Start it @KBC, VOKA Bryo, VOKA Accelero, BeCentral, Netwerk Ondernemen, hub.Brussels, Guberna and Reseau Entreprendre Bruxelles.
Belgium tech startups
Having said that four startups from Belgium have been awarded under various categories, letโs take a look at these startups and their functionalities from here.
#1 Bsit
Firstly, Bsit, which is the Startup of the Year. Bsit is the company that is behind the well-known babysit app and bagged 33% votes. Trailing behind is an AI-powered analytics platform DataStories with 22% votes. Ghent based into.care/Pridictiv providing an innovative digital health app gets 15% of the votes similar to the photo-app Neveo and InvestSuite, a fintech startup.
#2 Spott
Next, Spott has been awarded best Scale-up of the Year. It is an interactive shopping specialist, which is growing fast. It was acquired by an American competitor and also entered a joint venture with a Brazilian advertising company. Spott also won the rewards for the โBelgian brand of the yearโ. It got 28% votes while Datacampโs data science video tutorials grabbed 25% votes, Sweepbrigh and Qualifio got 16% votes each and Sortlist got 15% votes.
#3 e-peas
It is important to focus on the ‘Disruptive Innovation of the Year’. In this category, e-peas won the first prize. It is a scale-up from Mont-Saint-Guibert involved in making batteries of IoT-devices live forever. It won the Digital Walloniaโs Startup of the Yearย Award in 2018 and got 26% votes. PixelVision was close to its heels with 25% votes, Oncomfort with 20% votes, miDiagnostics with 17% votes and Qpinch with 12% votes.
#4 MicroFlavours
Lastly, MicroFlavours got the award for Student startup of the Year. Student entrepreneur Dario Vunckx came up with urban farming in Brussels and this startup sells healthy microgreens to hotels and restaurants in the surrounding areas. It got a whopping 35% votes while TechWolf trailed behind at 29% followed by Spentys with 15% votes, Broptimize with 13% votes and VOCsens with 8% votes.
