The people reaching for a pen over a keyboard are often written off as sentimental, clinging to a slower tool out of habit. Yet the more interesting explanation has nothing to do with feeling. When a hand moves a pen across paper, the brain appears to do something distinct from what it does at a keyboard, and a growing line of research links that difference to how we take in and hold on to information.
A quick note on what follows. We are writers reading the research here, not neuroscientists or learning specialists. The studies below are a mix of controlled experiments and lab measurements, some of them contested, and population-level patterns are not instructions for how any one person should study or work.
The nostalgia framing misreads the evidence
The easy story is that handwriting is a fading craft, kept alive by people who like the ritual of it. Some researchers who study the skill, however, push back on that framing directly, treating handwriting as a cognitive-motor skill rather than a quaint one. The act of forming letters by hand demands more of the writer than tapping keys does, and that extra demand may be the point rather than the drawback.
Mellissa Prunty, a reader in occupational therapy at Brunel University London who studies the link between handwriting and learning, puts the physical reality plainly. Holding a pen, she told National Geographic, is “a complex cognitive-motor skill that requires a lot of our attention.” That attentional cost is exactly what the nostalgia framing overlooks. Typing is faster and easier, and easier is not always better for learning.
What the brain does differently with a pen
In 2024, researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology reported one of the more striking lab findings on this question. Using a dense sensor array to record electrical activity across the scalp, the team measured brain connectivity in 36 university students as they handwrote words with a digital pen and typed the same words. Handwriting produced far more widespread connectivity across regions tied to movement, vision, sensory processing and memory than typing did.
Audrey van der Meer, a professor of neuropsychology who co-authored the study, described the contrast in plain terms. Writing by hand, she said, produces “brain connectivity patterns” that “are far more elaborate than when typewriting on a keyboard.”
The note-taking studies and where they get complicated
Perhaps the most cited support for handwriting comes from a 2014 paper by Pam Mueller, then at Princeton, and Daniel Oppenheimer, then at UCLA, with the memorable title “The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard.” Across three experiments, students watched lectures and took notes either by hand or on a laptop. As reported, students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand. Their explanation centred on processing, not speed. Laptop users tended to transcribe lectures word for word, while longhand writers, unable to keep up, had to summarize and reframe ideas in their own words.
The result was tidy and it travelled widely, but it did not fully survive closer scrutiny. In 2019, Kayla Morehead, John Dunlosky and Katherine Rawson at Kent State University ran a direct replication and extension of the original. Some trends still favored longhand, but the differences between groups did not consistently hold, including against a group that took no notes at all. Their conclusion is cautious: “concluding which method is superior for improving the functions of note-taking seems premature.”
The 2024 EEG study has drawn similar scrutiny. In a published commentary, cognitive neuroscientists Svetlana Pinet and Marieke Longcamp argued that the study could not support claims about learning because “the protocol did not include any learning”. Participants copied words they already knew, no memory was tested, and the typing condition was artificial.
Why the processing argument survives the doubt
The memory effect is not settled. Any claim that handwriting reliably and measurably boosts retention probably overstates things. The replication and the commentary both push back on that, and they are right to.
Neither critique, though, argues that typing is better. The Kent State team found the comparison murkier than the headline suggested. Pinet and Longcamp went out of their way to say handwriting’s importance is not itself in question. What persists across the whole debate is the mechanism rather than the size of the payoff. Writing by hand is slower, and that slowness forces a choice about what to keep and how to phrase it. Anyone who has tried to capture a fast talker with a pen knows the feeling of having to abandon the exact words and reach for the gist instead. That reframing is likely a form of deeper processing, whether or not a given experiment can measure it landing in memory a week later.
We’d say the nostalgia charge, then, probably has it backwards. People who write by hand are, knowingly or not, choosing the harder tool over the easier one — and difficulty of a certain kind is often where understanding gets built.
