Last update:

Switzerland and -Germany-based AERA Health, a preventive health startup, announced on Monday that it has raised €4M in a pre-seed round of funding from former Amazon Consumer CEO Jeff Wilke, Logitech’s President & CEO Bracken Darrell, Neworld.Global, Korify Capital, and Evoleen.

AERA Health also announced the launch of its hybrid digital and physical offerings in the DACH region.

As AERA Health secured funding, we at Silicon Canals interviewed Dr. Andrea Gartenbach, co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of AERA Health, to know more about how the company works, the incorporation of personalised health care, and more.

Dr. Andrea Gartenbach has +10 years of experience in Functional-Performance and Aging Medicine.

She believes in the power of personalised medicine and science, dedicating her career to supporting people to live longer and healthier lives and introducing high-performance approaches into healthcare.

Fund utilisation

AERA Health says it will use the funds primarily for the rollout of AERA Health’s platform and infrastructure, as well as the ongoing expansion of its team.

Talking about the company’s expansion to the Netherlands, Dr. Gartenbach says, “Immediately following our launch, we will focus on building our digital and physical infrastructure in DACH.”

She adds, “However, the Netherlands is attractive due to the overall market readiness and openness for innovative healthcare solutions. We expect to have more exciting news specifically regarding the Netherlands to share in the near future, but we can’t say any more for now.”

The company plans to open its first physical treatment space in Munich in April, with more physical spaces offering health checks, orthobiology, and longevity medicine services to follow throughout 2023.

Moving from reactive to proactive approach

Founded by Tim-Ole Pek (co-CEO), Judy Okten (co-CEO), and Dr. Andrea Gartenbach (CMO), AERA Health integrates preventive and longevity medicine into consumers’ everyday lives via existing systems.

A report from The Lancet reveals that 37 per cent of the world population suffers from multimorbidity (two or more long-term health conditions).

AERA Health aims to move away from the reactive approach of damage repair towards a more proactive approach of predictive safeguarding in public healthcare.

The company’s disruptive hybrid model brings data-driven P4 (predictive, preventive, personalised, participatory) medicine to consumers via existing healthcare infrastructure.

Dr. Gartenbach says, “AERA’s bespoke health plans are created in collaboration with medical professionals and range from baseline health optimisations through to extensive, next-generation longevity plans.”

She continues, “We conduct various analyses of consumers to create a sophisticated picture of their overall health situation, including combining DNA and biomarkers profiling, with an evaluation of habits and routine, as well feedback from wearable tech.”

“The treatments that are part of each tailor-made health plan are then delivered through AERA’s plug-in (shop-in-shop) physical spaces, as well as existing healthcare infrastructure – longevity clinics, medical practices, fitness, and wellbeing centres, etc,” says Dr. Gartenbach.

Privacy and security

AERA fully complies with ISO27001 and the GDPR EU data protection law.

To further enhance data security, AERA will only host its data in Europe and only services with additional backup policies in place will manage data.

AERA also engages in compliance monitoring and cybersecurity protection through cloud service providers that are compliant with GDPR and have active alerting systems in place.

According to Dr. Gartenbach, AERA follows the ‘four Cs’ of Cloud Native Security, which involves ensuring cloud security at various levels, including the Cloud Data Center (cloud service provider), Cluster (cloud service provider), Container (AERA), and Code (AERA).

To ensure disaster recovery is covered, AERA also has additional full-cluster backup.

“AERA never collects data unless necessary, does not share data unless necessary, accesses data only on a need-to-know basis, and ensures encryption at rest and in transit,” Dr. Gartenbach concludes.

Jeff Wilke, former Amazon Consumer CEO, says, “I’ve been searching for the right wellness partner for years: a company that integrates the latest science, personalised health data, counsel from medical professionals, and terrific tech. AERA Health is building precisely this capability, starting with its exceptional team. It was an easy decision to back AERA.”
