In recent years, several startups have emerged with the goal of mitigating climate change. These companies are developing innovative technologies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming.
While some are working on improving energy efficiency, others are focusing on developing renewable energy sources. A few other startups are working on new methods for sequestering carbon dioxide or reducing methane emissions from agriculture.
Each of these startups is playing a role in the fight against climate change, and together they are helping to create a more sustainable future for our planet.
Here, we have listed nine Amsterdam-based startups that are cooling the planet.
Perpetual Next
Founder/s: Martijn van Rheenen
Perpetual Next aims to reduce CO2 emissions and harvest CO2 from the atmosphere for its clients to prevent future climate change.ย
The Amsterdam-based company does this by reusing residual flows and upgrading organic residual flows into high-quality raw materials and products, while contributing to the circular economy.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals, the ESG standards, and the EU Green Deal are part of Perpetual Next’s goal. The company’s production facilities are in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, and Estonia.
Skytree
Founder/s: Alexander Gunkel, Max Beaumont
Skytree has developed a new technology to recirculate air in a cabin to the maximum, without the build-up of CO2 and pollutants and without fogging up the windows. The platform offers a Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology that filters CO2 and other (polluting) substances from the air.ย
The Amsterdam company focuses on the automotive sector, but for the future, it is working on a broad deployment of this real platform technology. It includes trains, buses, aircraft, and air treatment systems of large buildings and homes.
Vandebron
Founder/s: Aart van Veller, Matthijs Guichelaar, Remco Wilcke
Vandebron from Amsterdam delivers green electricity and regular gas to individual and business customers.ย
Unlike others, this Dutch company helps consumers to buy electricity directly from independent producers, such as farmers with wind turbines in their fields, without any intervention from energy companies. The company also allows customers to choose which producer they wish to be supplied by.
In 2019, Dutch gas and power provider Essent acquired Vandebron. As per this deal, Vandebron will keep its identity, brand, and business model, and continue operating as an independent company within Essent.
Triple Solar
Founder/s: Erica Mackey, NA
Triple Solar is on a mission to achieve maximum impact in reducing CO2 emissions while heating homes. The company has developed heat pump systems called PVT heat pump panels, using PVT panels as an energy source.ย
The company claims that it is an economical alternative to heat pumps that use an expensive ground source or noisy outdoor units. The company says more than 1000 homes in the Netherlands and abroad are now connected to a Triple Solar System.
Photanol
Founder/s: Vรฉronique De Bruijn
The Amsterdam-based company has developed a sustainable production technology for next-gen renewable chemical compounds. Using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and bacteria, Photanol has developed a way to transform carbon dioxide into a valuable product. The startup uses proprietary engineered cyanobacteria to process carbon dioxide (CO2) and sunlight into valuable chemicals.
AMMP
Founder/s: Hendrik Broering, Stine Carlรฉ, Svet Bajlekov
AMMP is a SaaS platform that offers remote monitoring and management for energy users, energy service companies, and vendors of renewable energy systems. The company’s mission is to make clean, reliable, decentralised energy a reality for households and businesses globally.ย
Before AMMP, the founding team worked together at E.ON Off-Grid Solutions to successfully deploy and operate mini-grids across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Start.Solar
Amsterdam-based Start.Solar is a solar panel marketplace that helps individuals invest in solar energy projects.ย
The company’s marketplace tracks ownership of solar panels placed on its solar farms on the Ethereum Blockchain and deposits the funds generated by selling the generated solar power on a recurring basis.
The Dutch company is on a mission to make it easy for anyone to invest in lucrative solar energy projects and accelerate the transition to clean energy sources to help fight climate change.
