The COVID-19 pandemic brought numerous challenges for companies, creating radically different settings to operate. Businesses, both small and large globally, scrambled to stay afloat.

The pandemic-related challenges proved to be a great deal for many, but some used it to their advantage and spurred a great deal of innovation, pivoted, and survived.

Many experts believed that pivoting one’s business model under normal conditions would have been a risky move if not for the unprecedented pressure brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Numerous companies in Amsterdam pivoted to help others weather the storm during the COVID-19 crisis. Here’s a list:

During the pandemic, the startup activated its worldwide network of manufacturers to produce medical equipment. They did it through their special COVID-19 Manufacturing Fund, a crowdfunding campaign, and shipped them to hospitals globally.

Earlier this year, Protolabs, a global technology-enabled digital manufacturing company, acquired 3D Hubs for €272.1M.

During the pandemic, the company came up with an amazing gesture – making their platform free for researchers looking for a vaccine for COVID-19. This move ensured researchers capture Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) research data and speed up the process of understanding the virus and disease.

In July, the company raised $45M (approx €38M) in funding in a Series B financing round led by Eight Roads Ventures and F-Prime Capital. Castor said it will use the funding to accelerate product development with a particular focus on scaling direct-to-patient trials globally.
