Someone in your life refuses to open Google Maps for a route they have done twice. You offer to send a pin. They say the cross street will do, thanks.

The easy reading is that they are stubborn, or a bit old-fashioned, or making some quiet point about screens. The more interesting reading, and the one the research supports, is that they are protecting something they would rather not lose.

Because there is a real difference between knowing where you are and being told where to turn. One of those builds over time. The other just delivers, once, and takes the receipt with it.

Your brain clocks off when the phone takes over

In 2017 a team at University College London put 24 volunteers in a brain scanner and had them find their way through a simulation of Soho. When people worked out their own route, two regions went to work: the hippocampus, which handles memory and navigation, and the prefrontal cortex, which handles planning. Both spiked as volunteers entered new streets, and spiked harder when there were more options to weigh up. A junction like Seven Dials, where seven streets meet, drove the activity up. A dead end drove it down.

Then the researchers switched the volunteers to turn-by-turn instructions. The spikes disappeared. Hugo Spiers, who led the study, described it as the brain losing interest in the streets around it.

Not damaged. Just idle.

The bill turns up years later

Idle is fine for an afternoon. The question is what happens across a decade of afternoons.

Researchers at McGill tested 50 regular drivers on spatial memory and measured it against their lifetime GPS use. The people with more GPS history behind them performed worse when asked to find their way without it. Thirteen of them came back three years later, and the ones who had leaned on GPS most in the interim showed the steepest decline in the kind of memory the hippocampus handles.

Worth being honest about the size of that follow-up group. Thirteen people is not a mountain of evidence, and a correlation between two things is not proof that one caused the other. But the direction of travel is consistent, and it has shown up in enough separate labs now to stop being a curiosity.

What you actually lose is not the route

Here is the part that gets missed. In one study, people were sent walking to a set of destinations using either a GPS device, a paper map, or nothing but a single walk-through of the route beforehand. The GPS group did worst. They walked further, stopped more often, moved more slowly, made bigger direction errors, and afterwards drew sketch maps that were noticeably poorer than the group who had simply walked it once.

They got there. They just never built the picture.

That is what’s being defended. It’s not the ability to recite a route. It’s a working mental model of a place: which way the river runs, what sits north of the station, how the noisy road and the quiet road end up in the same car park. A suburb you can hold in your head is not the same as a suburb you can only enter by invitation.

There is a smaller cost, too. A person navigating from memory is looking at the world. Noticing the bakery, the crooked tree, the spire that tells them they have gone too far. A person following the blue dot is looking at a phone.

The taxi driver footnote

London cab drivers spend years memorising the city to pass a test called the Knowledge, and a famous 2000 study found their posterior hippocampi were measurably larger than those of other Londoners. The longer they had been driving, the bigger the difference.

A 2024 paper in the BMJ took this somewhere stranger. Researchers went through roughly nine million American death certificates across 443 occupations and found that taxi and ambulance drivers had the lowest share of deaths attributed to Alzheimer’s disease of any job examined. The pattern did not appear in other driving jobs that make fewer real-time navigational demands.

Resist the urge to turn that into a health plan. It is observational work that cannot show cause and effect, and one plausible explanation is that a well-exercised sense of direction masks symptoms for longer rather than preventing anything. Still, it is a striking thing to find sitting in the data.

How to keep the skill without becoming a martyr about it

Look at the map before you leave rather than during. Build the route in your head, then keep the phone in your pocket as insurance.

Ask which direction rather than which turn. North of the river. East of the market. Compass beats choreography.

Pick three landmarks per trip and actually register them. That is the raw material your memory needs.

On roads you already half know, do not turn it on at all. Getting mildly lost ten minutes from home is about the cheapest training available.

And use the thing freely when the stakes are real. Unfamiliar city after dark, a tight connection, a hospital you have never driven to. Nobody hands out medals for arriving late on principle.

The person who waves off your pin is not romanticising the past. They have just worked out that a place you can hold in your head is somewhere you live, and a place you can only reach by following instructions is somewhere you keep arriving at.
