Amsterdam-based Holland Capital, an independent private equity firm, has invested in Hybrid Power Units (HPU) and Top Systems (TS), two Dutch companies specialising in battery-based energy solutions.
Holland Capital’s investment supports these companies’ growth plans, facilitating both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions.
Philip Wilms, Investment Director at Holland Capital, says, “We see enormous development in the market for lithium batteries, where our belief is that we will accelerate this transition if we pool expertise and make it more widely accessible.”
“In doing so, this is a great first step and we will keep our eyes open for new strategic acquisitions.”
Holland Capital, which claims to be one of the first independent private equity firms in the Netherlands, backs Dutch and German SMEs with growth ambitions. The firm focuses on healthcare, technology, and agrifood-tech sector.
The newly formed entity
The two battery-focused companies, Top Systems and Hybrid Power Units (HPU) are joining forces to drive the energy transition towards sustainability.
According to Holland Capital, this will enable the newly formed entity to meet the escalating demands for energy storage, particularly in the expanding high-voltage battery market.
Holland Capital’s investment aims to accelerate growth and promote batteries as a widely adopted emission-free alternative to fossil fuels. This supports the transition to cleaner energy solutions for a sustainable future.
Dick de Raad of HPU, says, “Holland Capital’s expertise and financial strength allow us to really think big. Joining forces with Top Systems gives us 38 years of commercial and technical expertise within the broader battery market.”
Erwin van Heijningen of TS, adds, “Together with HPU, we can work on new technical innovations. Think of high-voltage solutions that can be deployed on a large scale to address grid congestion issues, among other things.”
Brief about Hybrid Power Units
Founded in 2021, Hybrid Power Units provide solutions for temporary and mobile electricity supply, as well as network connection reinforcement. Its solutions offer temporary grid reinforcement for peak shaving (or load shedding) and can store solar power to address feed-in issues.
A Hybrid Power Unit, designed to supply electricity from a battery pack, offers charging options including solar, wind, grid connection or generator power.
For instance, the Hybrid Power Unit prioritises solar panels over a diesel generator, activating the generator only when battery levels are low. The system optimises the generator’s engine operation for maximum efficiency, achieving optimal power output per litre of fuel.
According to the company, this unit offers temporary power supply at any location and is customisable with various power capacities and battery options to suit different needs.
Hybrid Power Units BV is a sister company of Generatoren Nederland BV.
What does Top Systems offer?
Founded in 1984, Top Systems offers comprehensive battery-based power solutions. It claims to have developed a diverse and “high-quality” product portfolio, featuring inverter/battery chargers and lithium batteries sourced from suppliers like Victron Energy.
The firm says, “We work exclusively with high-quality brands such as Victron Energy and MG Energy Systems. Partly because of this, every energy and power solution we supply is of the highest level. That is why we give a longer warranty on the system than the suppliers of their parts.”
According to Top Systems, it serves a customer base of 34,332 clients across 9,235 projects.
