Advertising, analytics, payment, embedded-content, and communications providers may process information under their own privacy policies and may act as independent controllers for parts of that processing.

2. Scope

This Policy applies to the pages, newsletters, features, and services on this website that link to it, including our content and services concerning technology, startups, business, policy, and human behaviour. It does not govern third-party websites, advertisements, applications, or services that have their own policies.

3. Information we collect

Depending on how you use the site, we may collect:

  • Information you provide: name, email address, message content, preferences, and information submitted through features such as:
    • newsletters
    • contact messages
    • corrections
    • news tips and editorial submissions
  • Technical and usage information: IP address, browser and device details, approximate location, referring page, pages viewed, searches, timestamps, advertising interactions, consent choices, and security logs.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: identifiers used for security, preferences, analytics, advertising, consent management, and feature delivery.

Please do not submit sensitive or confidential information unless it is necessary for the service or request.

4. How we use information

  • provide, secure, maintain, and improve the website and requested services;
  • deliver newsletters, account access, purchases, notifications, or responses you request;
  • process submissions, corrections, support requests, and editorial communications;
  • measure audiences, diagnose problems, prevent fraud and abuse, and protect our rights;
  • select, deliver, limit, and measure advertising where advertising is active;
  • comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms; and
  • establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

5. Legal bases for EEA and UK visitors

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we process account, order, subscription, and requested-service information as necessary to perform a contract or take requested pre-contract steps. We rely on consent for newsletters, optional cookies, and personalised advertising where consent is required. We process records required for tax, accounting, regulatory, and legal compliance under legal obligations. We rely on legitimate interests for site security, fraud prevention, non-personalised audience measurement, editorial operations, service improvement, and establishing or defending legal claims, except where those interests are overridden by your rights and interests.

6. Service providers and disclosures

We disclose information only as reasonably necessary to categories of recipients such as:

  • hosting, content-delivery, security, and technical support providers;
  • analytics and audience-measurement providers;
  • advertising, measurement, and consent-management providers used on this site, as identified in the site’s privacy-choice interface or current vendor list;
  • newsletter, communications, form, notification, and customer-support providers;
  • payment, order, subscription, or course providers where those features are active;
  • professional advisers, regulators, courts, and law-enforcement bodies where required; and
  • a buyer, investor, or successor in connection with a corporate transaction.

We do not exchange personal information for money. Some disclosures for cross-context behavioural advertising may nevertheless constitute “sale,” “sharing,” or “targeted advertising” under applicable US state law.

7. Cookies, advertising, and privacy controls

Necessary technologies support security and core functions. Optional technologies may support analytics, personalisation, embedded media, and advertising. You can use the privacy-choice or consent interface displayed on the site, where available, to accept, reject, or change optional settings. You can also manage cookies in your browser.

Some US state laws may treat disclosures of online identifiers, device information, internet activity, approximate location, advertising interactions, and related inferences for personalised advertising as a “sale,” “sharing,” or “targeted advertising.” Where those laws apply, you may opt out through any privacy-choice control presented on the site or by contacting us. We do not knowingly sell or share personal information of children under 16 for targeted advertising.

US state privacy schedule

This schedule describes categories collected and disclosed during the preceding 12 months. We do not exchange personal information for money. Some disclosures for cross-context behavioural advertising may nevertheless constitute “sale,” “sharing,” or “targeted advertising” under applicable US state law. Advertising providers may use activity to infer likely interests for ad selection and measurement. We do not use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects about visitors.

8. AI-assisted editorial tools

AI-assisted tools may support research, source discovery, transcription, summarising source material, drafting, fact-checking support, headline development, and quality review. Humans make publication decisions and remain responsible for published content. Newsletter details and privacy-rights requests are not used in editorial AI workflows. We limit personal information provided to editorial AI tools to what is reasonably necessary.

9. International processing

We and our providers may process information in Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, Australia, and other locations. Where required, a transfer may rely on an applicable adequacy decision, the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, or another legally recognised safeguard available for the relevant provider and transfer. Contact us to request information about the safeguard applicable to a transfer.

10. Retention

We retain information only as long as reasonably necessary for the relevant purpose, including providing a requested service, maintaining records, resolving disputes, preventing abuse, meeting legal or accounting obligations, and protecting rights. Retention varies by record type and provider. We may keep limited records of consent, privacy requests, transactions, and security events for compliance and evidentiary purposes.

11. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organisational measures to protect information. No internet transmission or storage system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Your rights

Depending on where you live and subject to legal exceptions, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing, obtain portability, withdraw consent, opt out of targeted advertising or uses treated as sale or sharing, limit certain uses of sensitive personal information, use an authorised agent, appeal a decision, and receive equal service without discrimination for exercising a privacy right.

You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing carried out before withdrawal. Withdrawal may prevent us from continuing a requested feature or service. Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, you may lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority in the country where you live or work, or where you believe an infringement occurred. You may also contact us with a complaint about our handling of personal information. We will investigate and respond in accordance with applicable law.

To exercise a right, email hello@siliconcanals.com with “Privacy Request” in the subject line and describe your request and jurisdiction. We may need to verify identity and authority. We respond within the period required by applicable law and provide appeal instructions where a right of appeal applies.

13. Children

The site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Some regions provide additional protections for older minors. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us.

14. Third-party links and embeds

Pages may contain links, advertisements, videos, social posts, forms, or other third-party content. Those providers control their own processing. Review their policies before providing information.

15. Changes

We may update this Policy when practices or legal obligations change. The “Last updated” date shows the latest revision. Where required, we will provide additional notice or request consent before materially different processing begins.
