Prominently known for pizza and pasta, Italy is becoming a hotbed of new tech talent in Europe. It has all the ingredients you need including strong corporations, a solid economy, and a young educated population, to make it the next great place to start a company.

Back in 2012, Italy introduced the Italian Startup Act to provide a favourable environment for the establishment and the development of innovative companies. Furthermore, the government launched several new initiatives including Visa Scheme, Invitalia to make the country more attractive to entrepreneurs.

Since then, the innovative startups registered have peaked. From 2017 to 2018, the number of startups in Italy rose over 20 percent, from 7,866 to 9,647. A report from 2018 showed Italian startups employed more than 50,000 people and earned just under €1 billion in total revenue. According to Startup Italia reports, Italian startups raised €522 million, up from just €140 million in 2017.

Recently, Lumen Ventures, the Rome and London-based Venture Capital firm launched a €25 million maiden fund. They are looking for early-stage startups to meet their ‘criteria of excellence’, regarding business model and growth potential.
