Eindhoven-based Micro Turbine Technology (MTT), a company that produces domestic heating systems, microturbines, and micro CHP systems, announced on Tuesday that it has raised €5M in a fresh round of funding.

The investment was made by Canada-based Avila Energy. The energy company is listed on the Canadian stock exchange and has the ambition to become a leading player in the energy transition in North America. MTT’s sustainable solution plays a key role in this.

Capital utilisation

MTT says it will use the funds to expand production of its new product, EnerTwin, for the European market.

The EnerTwin is a small, environmentally friendly power plant that simultaneously produces heat and electricity using the smallest gas turbine in the world. It runs on natural gas, LPG, biomethane, and hydrogen mixes, and thereby facilitates the energy transition to a low-carbon future in buildings.

Willy Ahout, CEO of MTT, says, “We at MTT are excited about the future collaboration with Avila. This partnership is in line with our plans to sell our advanced micro turbine technology to a global market. Avila’s investment will enable MTT to expand in-house production and strengthen our sales efforts in the European market. At the same time, we are pleased to be able to help Avila future-proof the heat and power supply of their customers in North America.”

Avila Energy says it has purchased a licence for the manufacturing and marketing of the EnerTwin in the North American market. Beginning in 2026, Avila plans to sell 50,000 EnerTwin systems in North America as part of an integrated offering that also includes the provision of energy to their end customers.

Developed the world’s smallest microturbine

Established in 2003, MTT is a high-tech company that has created a patented micro-turbine with several uses. The first commercial application is the development of the EnerTwin, a small system for generating electricity and heat at the same time and which is suitable for historic buildings, among other things.

Due to EnerTwin’s high efficiency and certification for the use of sustainable fuels like bioLPG, green gas, biomethane, or a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen (now 23 per cent, and eventually even 100 per cent hydrogen), this system may be considered an energy transition product. The technique provides a long-term fix, particularly for structures where heat pumps cannot be employed.

MTT now offers technical services for the creation of micro-turbine applications to third parties. With regard to pertinent topics, including clean combustion technologies, recuperator technology, heat exchange ideas, and micro-turbine control, MTT has created a distinctive and tested technology over the past several years.

Additionally, MTT has also assembled a qualified team of technical experts and created a pan-European network of reliable R&D and industrial partners, both of which are essential for the development of microturbine applications.
