Samsung Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X, and now the iconic Moto Razr! It’s safe to say the era of foldable smartphones is upon us. These foldable smartphones are poised to transform the tech industry in the years to come.

Razr gets a new lease of life!

After lots of speculations and leaks, Motorola has launched its much-awaited foldable phone, dubbed as Motorola Razr, at a press event in Los Angeles. Retaining the iconic name, this new-gen phone got a new lease of life now in the foldable form factor, which of course, is a very different take when compared to Samsung Galaxy Fold or Mate X.

Traditional clamshell look!

This device features a 6.2-inch 21:9 aspect ratio plastic OLED flexible display that folds completely into half (in the horizontal axis), giving it a traditional clamshell look. Furthermore, the company has added a 2.7-inch secondary OLED display on the front called Quick View. It can show notifications, a selfie camera mode, music control, and much more.

It’s worth mentioning that Motorola is working with Google to optimise the app, especially on the transition part from the front display to the main one.

Zero-gap hinge!

As per the company claims, the zero-gap hinge allows Razr to close with both sides perfectly flush. The phone also comes with a proprietary coating to make the panel scuff resistant and has an internal nano-coating for splash resistance as well.

It seems Motorola has worked with Lenovo (best known for Yoga-series laptops and tablets) on the complex mechanism of multiple hinges and sliding plates to fold and unfold the phone. The Motorola Razr measures 72x94x14mm when its folded and 72x172x6.9mm in the unfolded state. It weighs around 205 grams, as well.

Some specs!

On the hardware front, Motorola has made some compromises! The Motorola Razr is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, which is not a bad chipset at all, but flagship processor implementation would have been great. However, the company said that the decision to use 710 is to optimise battery life and heat management.

Moving on to camera, it has a 16MP rear camera that also acts as a selfie camera when the phone is folded. It also comes with NightVision mode to make sure the device takes excellent photos during the low-light conditions. Also, there is a 5MP front camera housed inside the notch. It is shipped with Android 9 Pie out of the box. The whole hardware is powered by a 2510mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging.

Pre-orders from December!

The Moto Razr comes just in Noir Black colour and will be available for pre-order in selected markets across Europe starting in December. In the UK, Motorola Razr will be exclusively available on EE. Having said that, prices for these markets are yet to be announced.

In the US, this foldable phone will be available for pre-order from Verizon (exclusive) starting from December 26th at $62.49 (approx €56.69)/ month for2 years on Verizon Device Payment or $1,499.99 (approx €1,360.72) without contract. It will be in stores and online on January 9.

The Motorola Razr is definitely a bold experiment and has addressed issues with the build quality and screen creases in a proper way. We’d pocket this phone anytime over the Samsung Galaxy Fold or Huawei Mate X. What about you? Do let us know your comment below!

UPDATE: As per the latest report, Moto Razr will be priced at €1,600 ($1,860) in Europe, that too reportedly for Sweden. It’s worth mentioning that it is just leaked info at the moment, and the Moto officials didn’t offer more details. The report also adds that the Motorola Razr will become available in Sweden from January 24. Other countries such as Germany, the Netherlands will get the device at that time, as well. Pre-order for Italy starts on December 4.
