Reykjavik, Iceland-based Össur, a company that develops, produces, and sells non-invasive orthopaedics, announced on Monday that it has acquired US-based Naked Prosthetics, a medical equipment manufacturer.
Naked Prosthetics is on a mission to assist finger and partial-hand amputees by positively impacting their lives by providing functional, high-quality finger prostheses to get people back to work and doing the things they love. The company says that the mechanical devices are individually designed to mimic the natural motion of the finger.
Bob Thompson, CEO of Naked Prosthetics, says, “Össur’s global reach and expertise make them an obvious and welcome next step for Naked Prosthetics’ goal of getting more finger amputees back to work and doing what they love. We are excited to join forces with the Össur team and continue to grow the partial-hand prosthetic market.”
Currently, the company has around 70 employees and its sales amounted to $9M in 2021.
Aim of this acquisition
Naked Prosthetics’ devices aim to restore the user’s ability to perform daily tasks, supporting job retention and encouraging an active lifestyle. Currently, the company manufactures four devices to replace the partial or total loss of the finger. These devices are individually designed to mimic the natural motion of the finger, utilising the remainder of an amputee’s digit to power each device. It works with clinics, independent prosthetists, physicians, and surgeons to provide prostheses that are “simple, elegant, and fully functional for everyday use”.
In a statement, Össur says that this acquisition meets a crucial need for patients who have lost some or all of their fingers and hands, a previously neglected but expanding demographic. Össur also says that this deal will improve Össur’s worldwide upper limb product offering and enable it to serve a larger number of amputees desiring to live a “Life Without Limitations”.
Sveinn Solvason, President and CEO of Össur, says, “Naked Prosthetics has developed functional and high-quality finger prostheses that complement our product portfolio and add an important range to our upper limb product offering. The acquisition strengthens our global market position, and we are pleased to welcome the employees of Naked Prosthetics to the Össur team.”
