Last update:

Delft-based QuantWare, a company that develops technology for quantum processors, has secured €20M in a Series A funding round.

The investment was co-led by Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund and Innovation Quarter, with participation from EIC Fund and existing investors FORWARD.one, Graduate Entrepreneur Fund, and QDNL Participations.

Job van der Voort, founder and CEO of Remote.com, also joined the round.

Accelerating the advent of the quantum computer

Founded in 2020 by Alessandro Bruno and Matthijs Rijlaarsdam, QuantWare develops quantum hardware and VIO large quantum processors (QPUs) scaling technology. The company supports quantum computing systems in 20 countries across four continents.

VIO enables scaling for any qubit design and provides a pathway toward systems with more than 1 million qubits. The technology is available in fully packaged QPUs and through Foundry and Packaging Services.

Quantum processors without VIO have a limited number of qubits, requiring multiple smaller systems to be connected to form a larger one. These connections introduce noise, reducing overall computational efficiency compared to a single, unified system.

Existing quantum computers, including those from Google and IBM, have between 100 and 1,000 qubits. QuantWare’s VIO technology is designed to support the development of larger quantum processors with increased computational capacity.

QuantWare provides VIO through its own designed quantum processors and offers the technology to third-party customers via Foundry and Packaging Services. The company supplies quantum computing technology to customers in 20 countries.

Capital utilisation

QuantWare will use the funds to develop VIO and expand its chip fabrication facilities. This will support the production of larger quantum processors and help meet growing customer demand.

Matthijs Rijlaarsdam, CEO and co-founder at QuantWare, says, “Our mission is to make VIO the scaling standard and have it power the first million-qubit quantum computers of the hyperscalers of tomorrow.”

“We are building the best team in the world to achieve this mission. Accelerating the path towards that moment is a very important thing to do, as systems of that size will change the world”

Contralto-A: a QPU for quantum error correction

Last week, QuantWare launched pre-orders for “Contralto -A”, a quantum processor designed for error correction.

Following Google’s announcement of its “Willow” error-correcting quantum chip, QuantWare has seen increased customer demand for large-scale error correction.

Contralto-A is an initial step in this process. It is nearly twice the size of other commercially available solutions and is designed to be upgraded to QuantWare’s larger VIO-powered processors.

Brief about the EIC Fund

The European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund invests across various technologies and sectors in EU countries and those associated with Horizon Europe. It provides the investment component of the EIC Accelerator blended finance, with the European Investment Bank serving as its investment adviser.

The fund aims to address financing gaps by supporting the development and commercialisation of new technologies, attracting market players, and facilitating co-investments. It also focuses on supporting female founders and reducing the innovation divide among EU countries.
