Last update:

Rotterdam-based FuelFWD, a startup focused on digital solutions for the renewable fuels sector, has completed a seed investment round led by Value Factory Ventures.

The round also saw continued support from Docklab Ventures and the Port of Rotterdam, who are investing in FuelFWD for the second time.

Johan van Heusden, CFO of Value Factory Ventures, says, “We’re thrilled to add FuelFWD to our portfolio. This startup accelerates the energy transition by enhancing efficiency and transparency in the renewable fuels supply chain. It perfectly aligns with our investment focus on startups that play an active role in combating climate change through groundbreaking solutions.”

A software for companies trading in renewable fuels

FuelFWD aims to simplify the renewable fuels market by addressing compliance challenges and providing traceability.

The company offers an advanced software solution that replaces manual, Excel-based workflows for compliance administration and reporting.

Using AI, the software digitises error-prone processes and automatically flags potential compliance issues, helping biofuel and e-fuel producers and traders work more efficiently, reduce costs, and minimise compliance risks.

FuelFWD’s solution is “unique” in that it functions both as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) when multiple parties within the supply chain use the software.

Its digital fuel passport enhances the traceability of renewable fuels, ensuring accurate tracking from source to consumer and securing the value of sustainable alternatives.

According to the company, the software is independent of specific certifications or sustainable fuels, offering control, efficiency, and auditability from the start.

FuelFWD was founded by Menno van der Zalm and Vincent Tribou as a spin-out from Docklab, a technology lab and venture studio. Federico Pereiro joined the management team earlier this summer, alongside a group of skilled software developers.

Capital utilisation

The funds will help accelerate FuelFWD’s growth and development of its innovative solution.

Menno van der Zalm, MD of FuelFWD, looks forward to the next growth phase. He says, “Renewable fuels are the future. Our mission is to help companies operate more efficiently and compliantly in a complex and rapidly changing market.”

“With the support of Docklab Ventures and Value Factory Ventures, we can further develop our solution and maximise its potential. We are proud of the collaboration and look to the future with confidence.”

Arnoud Jullens, CEO of Docklab Ventures, adds, “The energy transition requires not only the production, storage, and distribution of renewable fuels but also digital transformation within companies and supply chains. FuelFWD is such a solution – the ‘lubricant’ that accelerates the growth of sustainable fuel use.”
