Last update:

When Smartphones were first introduced, not many people could have foretold how they would evolve. And while new handsets are being introduced almost every week, the global smartphone industry has hit a saturation point as the shipping numbers keep declining quarter over quarter. To pull the sector out of its slump, some companies took a bold step and introduced the concept of foldable phones. Samsung is one such company who took a risk with its Galaxy Fold but its gamble seems to have paid off.

Samsung Galaxy Fold might be coming soon to The Netherlands

Samsung could soon start selling the Galaxy Fold in The Netherlands, as per a SamMobile report. While the report doesn’t give us a concrete time frame for the sales, the company’s first foldable phone was expected to be made available in The Netherlands soon. The handset is already being sold in major regions around the world, along with some other European markets. This report follows another one, which claims that the Galaxy Fold will soon be released in Nordic countries as well.

Are foldable phones the future?

Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold turned out to be something of a gamble for the company. When it was originally introduced, the inner foldable display on some of the units malfunctioned and the company had to push its sales for months, till it corrected what was wrong. Now, the company says it has sold over 500,000 units of the handset, which costs £1900 (€2,200 approx) in the UK.

Samsung’s key rivals are yet to commercially launch any foldable phones, even though many have confirmed to be working on one. Xiaomi, Huawei, Motorola and some other companies are expected to soon announce their foldable smartphones. However, this doesn’t entirely mean that folding smartphones will be the future. The technology is relatively new and is considerably expensive. There will be many hurdles to cross before it is made available for a wider audience.

Samsung Galaxy Fold specifications

Samsung Galaxy Fold comes at a premium and the company offers top of the line hardware in it. In the unfolded state, the main screen is a 7.3-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED display with a 4.2:3 aspect ratio and 2152 x 1536 resolution. This inner display is bigger when unfolded, the device is sort of transformed into a tablet. Furthermore, there’s a 10MP + 8MP dual front camera setup on the device when it is unfolded.

When folded, there’s a secondary Super AMOLED display on the front that is 4.6-inch in size and has a 21:9 aspect ratio. A 10MP camera is present here for selfies. Coming to the main camera setup on the handset, it features three sensors, a 16MP ultra wide angle, a 12MP wide angle and a 12MP telephoto. Powered by a 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, the device sports 12GB RAM and comes with 512GB of internal storage.
