Pando is a single tree. It is also a forest of 47,000 trunks spread across 106 acres of south-central Utah, every white-barked stem genetically identical to every other, all connected beneath the soil by one continuous root system.

At dusk in early autumn, a mule deer steps out from the sagebrush and lowers its head to a green shoot no taller than a child’s hand. The shoot is a Pando sucker, one of the colony’s replacement generation, and it will not survive the night. Above the deer, tens of thousands of white trunks stand quiet in the cooling air, their leaves trembling on flattened stalks. From the road along Fish Lake, the grove looks like an ordinary aspen stand. It is not.

What the deer is browsing is a fragment of the heaviest single living organism on Earth. Latin for I spread, Pando weighs an estimated 13 million pounds, roughly 6,000 tonnes, and as far as anyone has measured, nothing else alive comes close by mass above ground. It sits up near 9,000 feet on the Colorado Plateau, in Fishlake National Forest, dotted with juniper and sagebrush. National Geographic has followed the science on it for years.

One root system, 47,000 trunks

Quaking aspens are North America’s most widely distributed tree, and they often reproduce by cloning. A single seed germinates, sends down roots, and then pushes up genetically identical stems, suckers, that can spread laterally for decades. What looks like a stand of separate trees is frequently one organism wearing thousands of faces.

Most aspen clones cover less than an acre. Pando covers 106. That is roughly twice the footprint of New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, packed with around 440 stems per acre, one trunk every ten feet, spread over volcanic rock and boulders the size of cars.

Each individual trunk lives 85 to 130 years. When one dies, new green shoots rise from the shared root system to replace it. The trunks are mortal. The root system, in theory, is not.

Older than the last ice age?

Pando’s exact age is a genuine scientific puzzle. Some popular claims put it at 80,000 years, even a million. Paul Rogers, an ecologist at Utah State University who directs the Western Aspen Alliance and has spent years studying the grove, considers both figures wildly unlikely. His best estimate is a few thousand years, younger, he says, than the last ice age, which ended roughly 12,000 years ago.

Friends of Pando, the nonprofit working to document the colony, dates the germinating seed at somewhere between 9,000 and 12,000 years ago. Other estimates push further. A piece in IFLScience surveying the debate noted the colony has been described as potentially up to 80,000 years old, though most working ecologists consider the lower figures more defensible.

The honest answer: nobody knows. Wood doesn’t preserve a record going back that far, the original founding seed is long gone, and the genome of a clone doesn’t carry the kind of mutation clock you can read off a trunk ring. What’s certain is that Pando predates writing, agriculture, and most of the species of large mammal that share its forest today.

Heavier than 35 blue whales

The mass figure of 13 million pounds comes from estimates assembled across decades of survey work. By way of comparison, that is roughly the weight of 35 blue whales, or 1,000 African elephants, or the combined body weight of every person who attended Super Bowl LVI in 2022.

Pando achieves that mass not by growing one enormous trunk but by quietly knitting tens of thousands of slender ones to a single buried network. Most of the organism is underground. The forest above is the visible exhalation of something much larger beneath your boots.

How one tree became a forest

The colony was first identified in the mid-1970s by Burton Barnes, a botanist at the University of Michigan, who walked the grove comparing leaves from neighbouring stems. The leaves matched in ways that suggested shared genetics. Decades later, researchers sampled DNA from 209 stems across the stand and confirmed it: Barnes had been right. The entire 106 acres was one plant.

Aspens spread this aggressively because their survival strategy treats above-ground damage as a prompt to grow. Cut a stem, burn it, scar it, and the root system answers with new suckers, sometimes 3,500 per acre, dense enough, according to retired Forest Service scientist Stanley Kitchen, that it feels like walking through a cornfield. Fertility is not Pando’s problem.

The leaves that hum

Quaking aspens get their name from the way their leaves move. The petiole, the stalk attaching leaf to twig, is flattened perpendicular to the leaf blade, so even the faintest breeze sends each leaf shivering. Multiply that by tens of millions of leaves across 106 acres, all genetically synced, and the grove produces a sound described as something close to a steady rain. Visitors call Pando the Trembling Giant.

In autumn the leaves turn gold in unison. Because the trunks share a genome, the colour change does not stagger across the stand the way it does in a mixed forest. The whole organism flares at once. Photographers have spent years documenting this. Friends of Pando is in the process of producing the largest image ever recorded of a single organism, stitched together from thousands of overlapping photographs.

Why it is dying

Pando is not aging gracefully. In 2018, Rogers reviewed 72 years of aerial photography and conducted the first comprehensive analysis of the grove. He found fewer trunks regenerating than dying. Recent observations show the gap widening.

The killer is not disease. It is mule deer.

From August through October, when surrounding plants dry out, mule deer move into Pando to graze on the tender new shoots, the colony’s replacement generation. Cattle, brought up under federal grazing permits for about two weeks each fall, do the same. The shoots get mowed down before they can become trunks. Hunting is restricted around Pando because it sits inside a recreation area with cabins and campgrounds, and the deer have learned this. They gather where they are safe. Predators that once kept herds moving, wolves, cougars, bears, were eliminated from the region long ago. The forest is full of 85-year-old trunks with almost no children behind them. Rogers told National Geographic that Pando’s lack of young trees creates a demographic crisis, comparing it to a town where almost everyone is elderly with no younger generation to replace them, and explained that this demographic imbalance represents the core problem facing Pando’s survival.

The experiments inside the fence

In the late 1980s, the U.S. Forest Service clear-cut two small patches of Pando as an experiment. Nothing grew back. The shoots were eaten as they appeared. In 1992, foresters cut a third patch and fenced it off. That section is now a dense thicket of five-inch-diameter trunks, all roughly 35 feet tall.

The conclusion is uncomfortable. The fenced parts of Pando are regenerating. The unfenced parts are not. The grove is being split, ecologically, into two trajectories, and the parts left to the deer are quietly developing different understory plants because the missing canopy lets in too much light.

Solutions are slow. Some ranchers have grazed cattle on these forest units for generations. Deer and elk populations are managed by the state, which faces pressure to keep numbers high for hunters. Large-scale fencing requires money and maintenance, and raises the obvious question of whether the world’s largest organism should be caged like an exhibit. According to a Forbes piece on Pando’s ecological role, the grove sustains an entire community of understory species, sagebrush, wildflowers, birds, insects, that depend on the canopy staying intact.

How it compares to the other contenders

Pando holds the record for the heaviest single organism above ground. By spread, however, it is not the largest living thing measured. That title goes to a honey fungus in Oregon, Armillaria ostoyae, whose mycelial mat covers 2,385 acres of the Malheur National Forest, more than 22 times Pando’s footprint. Silicon Canals has explored the Oregon fungus and its slow killing of surrounding conifers. The fungus is estimated to weigh around 35,000 tonnes; Pando, roughly 6,000.

Pando’s claim is different. It is the heaviest single visible organism. The fungus does its work underground, betrayed only by the dying trees above it. Pando does its work in the open. 47,000 trembling white columns that, taken together, are one being.

What it looks like from the road

Pando straddles State Route 25, the scenic byway that runs along Fish Lake, Utah’s largest natural mountain lake. From Salt Lake City the drive is about three hours south. There is no entrance, no ticket, no fence around most of it. A traveller can pull off the highway, walk into the grove, and stand inside an organism older than the pyramids.

Doctor Creek Campground sits directly on top of Pando’s roots. The understory is sparse where the deer have been working. The trunks are tall, white, and roughly the same height, the visual signature of a forest in which the elders are still standing but the children have not arrived.

The trees that exist now will fall within a century. What replaces them, if anything does, depends on whether the shoots beneath your feet ever get tall enough to escape the deer.

The root system has been there since people were still learning to plant wheat. It will outlast almost everything you have ever read about, provided the next generation of stems is allowed to grow. The largest living thing on Earth is being decided, right now, one bitten sapling at a time.
