The usual self-improvement sequence is almost too familiar to notice. Become more disciplined, resist more temptation, make better choices, and the better life will eventually make you feel better.
A paper published online in November 2025 tested that assumed sequence across time and found the clearer statistical path running in the other direction. When people reported higher psychological well-being than usual, they later reported stronger self-control. Earlier self-control did not reliably predict later well-being in the same models.
I am a writer, not a clinician. This is a reading of one longitudinal paper, not psychological advice, and the findings do not show that deliberately increasing well-being will necessarily cause self-control to improve.
Two groups were measured three times
Shuna Shiann Khoo and colleagues reported two three-wave longitudinal studies in Social Psychological and Personality Science. According to the peer-reviewed paper, one sample was Asian and the other American, allowing the team to examine the same question across different cultures and time intervals.
Study 1 followed 377 working adults from an Asian country. Participants completed three surveys with six months between each wave, creating a one-year span from the first measurement to the third. Study 2 followed 1,299 working adults in the United States, who completed three monthly surveys. The relevant prediction therefore covered six months in the first sample and one month in the second.
Self-control was measured with a 20-item questionnaire covering three broad forms of regulation: inhibiting an unwanted impulse, initiating a useful action instead of delaying it, and continuing behaviour consistently. The well-being measures differed between the samples. The Asian questionnaire included happiness, self-worth and appreciation of life; the US measure covered positive feelings including optimism, energy and happiness.
Every key measure was self-reported. The researchers were studying how adults rated their own functioning and well-being, not observing their bank accounts, browser histories, diets or completion of assigned tasks.
The real distinction is between people and within a person
At each point in time, self-control and well-being were positively correlated. People who described themselves as more self-controlled also tended to say they were doing better psychologically. That familiar pattern is genuine, but it cannot tell us which factor came first.
A simple correlation blends two different questions. First, do people who are habitually high in self-control also tend to report higher well-being than other people? Second, when the same person rises above or falls below their own usual well-being, does their self-control change afterward? The first is a comparison between people. The second follows movement within one person.
Khoo’s team used a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model to separate those levels. The method was developed partly in response to the concern that conventional cross-lagged models can mistake stable differences between people for change within people, as Ellen Hamaker and colleagues explained in their 2015 methodological paper.
Once the stable person-level association was separated out, earlier well-being positively predicted later self-control at the six-month interval in Study 1 and the one-month interval in Study 2. The opposite path, from self-control to later well-being, was not statistically supported.
This is one paper, not settled consensus. Its main contribution is not the slogan that happiness beats discipline. It is the more technical demonstration that an association seen between different people can tell a different directional story when researchers follow changes inside the same people.
“Did not predict” is a narrower result than “has no effect”
The title needs to be read with statistical precision. Self-control did not predict later well-being under these questionnaires, time intervals, samples and models. That is an absence of reliable evidence for one directional path here. It is not proof that self-control can never contribute to anyone’s future well-being.
Nor was this an experiment. The researchers did not randomly increase psychological well-being in one group and self-control in another, then compare what happened. Repeated measurements establish temporal order more convincingly than a single survey, but changing work, relationships, health, money, sleep or stress could still influence both variables. A cross-lagged association is compatible with causation; it does not establish it.
The intervals matter too. A relationship might operate over days, years or around particular events rather than in a smooth monthly or six-month rhythm. Self-control might also affect specific parts of well-being indirectly, perhaps by improving a relationship or helping someone complete valued work, without producing a detectable shift in a broad questionnaire at the next wave.
The safest reading is therefore asymmetric but not absolute. These two datasets repeatedly supported well-being as the earlier predictor. They did not provide comparable support for self-control as the earlier predictor.
Older self-control findings do not disappear
The new result lands in a literature where self-control and well-being have long been positively linked. In a 2024 review, Utrecht University psychologist Denise de Ridder described a robust but moderate association between trait self-control and life satisfaction, positive affect and a sense of meaning. The review also noted that much of the evidence was cross-sectional and that between-person associations often appeared stronger than within-person effects.
I recently wrote about Angela Duckworth and Martin Seligman’s study of eighth-graders, where self-discipline predicted final grades more strongly than IQ. That finding concerned academic performance over a school year, not later psychological well-being. A capacity can predict one valuable outcome without being the detectable cause of every other one.
There is also evidence that people high in trait self-control often rely on helpful routines rather than winning a constant series of internal battles. Across six studies involving 2,274 participants, Brian Galla and Duckworth found that beneficial habits partly mediated the relationship between trait self-control and outcomes including study, exercise, sleep and academic performance.
That research and Khoo’s paper are not direct rivals. One asks how self-controlled people often manage behaviour. The other asks which of two self-reported qualities tends to precede movement in the other. Together they make self-control look less like a single lump of willpower and more like a capacity supported by habits, circumstances and psychological state.
Feeling well may supply room to function well
The mechanism remains open. Khoo and colleagues discuss the possibility that positive feelings broaden attention and help build psychological resources. Someone who feels energetic, optimistic and appreciative of life may have more capacity to begin an unpleasant task, persist through friction or step away from an impulse.
That is a plausible interpretation, not something the two studies directly tested. The questionnaires cannot reveal whether positive emotion improved cognitive flexibility, whether better circumstances lifted both measures, whether participants interpreted their own behaviour more generously when feeling well, or whether another process connected the two.
An intensive longitudinal study by Johanna Schmid and colleagues adds another useful complication. Sixty-four university students completed 1,459 evening reports across three nine-day bursts. Their day-to-day self-control fluctuated substantially, and days of higher self-control were associated with several aspects of better subjective well-being. That small study did not settle direction either, but it reinforces the point that self-control is not simply a fixed quantity a person carries unchanged.
For me, the shift is less about replacing one heroic trait with another than about retiring the heroic story altogether. Self-control may partly reflect whether a person has enough energy, stability and helpful structure available at that moment.
The self-improvement reversal should not become another command
The obvious temptation is to convert the study into fresh optimisation advice: achieve well-being first, then discipline will arrive. That would overstate an observational paper and turn a nuanced finding into another demand.
Psychological well-being is not a switch people can always choose to turn on. Work, care responsibilities, financial security, physical health, relationships and living conditions can shape how much room someone has to feel well and regulate behaviour. Those influences were not manipulated or fully isolated here.
The paper also does not say that commitments, habits or self-control cease to matter. It says that, in these models, increases in self-control did not forecast later increases in broad psychological well-being, while increases in well-being did forecast later self-control. That should narrow the claim, not inflate it.
What the result changes most usefully is the moral framing. Difficulty starting, persisting or resisting does not automatically reveal a defective character. Across these two samples, self-control looked partly like something that became more available after people were feeling and functioning better.
The familiar story makes well-being a prize awarded after enough discipline. This study suggests that, at least sometimes, well-being may be part of the capacity from which disciplined action grows.
