Last update:

From a startup to a scaleup and also a unicorn, Takeaway.com has made a long and successful way to become one of the leading online food delivery marketplaces in Continental Europe and Vietnam. The Dutch company has done various major acquisitions before, but recently Takeaway.com has acquired the Foodarena business in Switzerland from Delivery Hero Group.

While the financial details have not been disclosed, the company is bullish that this acquisition will enhance its market position in the country.

For those seeking out some details, Takeaway.com was founded by Jitse Groen in 2000 and till now the company has received funding from 3 investors raising €86 million and €328 million from the IPO in 2016.

Initially started with the domain name Thuisbezorgd.nl, Takeaway.com now operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Poland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Portugal, Romania, and Bulgaria in Europe and Vietnam.

How it works?

Takeaway.com offers users an online marketplace to order food. The participating restaurants deliver food themselves using its platform, which serves as a source for orders and facilitates the online payment. The food delivery service operates through mobile applications for Android and iOS and website. It generates revenues from the commissions on the food that is ordered using its platform and online payment service fees as well.

With over 1,100 employees, the group processed orders worth €1,313 million and generated revenue of €166 million in 2017 and Takeaway.com is also listed on Euronext Amsterdam.

4 major acquisitions before today

Having said that, we at Silicon Canals have listed all the acquisitions made by Takeaway.com over these years in an attempt to expand its market presence and strengthen its foothold in the online food market. Let’s take a look!

#1 Foodarena

Foodarena is a Swiss pioneer in the online food delivery market segment. Users can order food online from the menu in the platform. The service has completed over 900 handpicked delivery services all over Switzerland. There is no word regarding the exact amount involved in finalizing the deal but it sure marks the expansion of Takeaway.com in the Swiss.

#2 Oliviera and BGmenu

Back in February 2018, the Dutch-based food delivery scaleup acquired Bulgarian startup BGmenu for €10.5 million. BGmenu operates the food delivery service in Bulgaria and Romania running the Oliviera brand. The acquisition of these startups will bolster the business of Takeaway.com in these countries.

#3 Just Eat

In 2016, Takeaway.com took over the Netherland and Belgium businesses of Just Eat for an amount of €22.5 million. While this acquisition marked the foray of the Netherlands scaleup into these two markets, the British business was sold to Just Eat due to the insufficiency of Takeway.com to sustain in the market.

#4 Lieferando

Takeaway.com acquired Lieferando in 2014. The Berlin-based online food ordering startup’s acquisition helped Takeaway.com raise €73 million in additional funding from the founders of the startup, Prime Ventures and Macquarie Capital. With the closure of this deal, Takeaway.com expanded its presence in Germany.
