We all know how important it is to conserve energy. Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s also good for our wallets. As the world faces an ever-increasing demand for energy, it’s more important than ever to find ways to generate it that don’t put a strain on our natural resources. In this case, energy startups are the key to developing new technologies that can make a big difference.
In recent years, there has been a surge in the number of energy startups in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands. These startups play a critical role in transitioning to a low-carbon economy bringing new ideas and technologies to market. Some of the ideas include new ways to generate energy to improve energy storage or develop more efficient energy use methods.
Dealroom has recently released a list of the top 100 energy startups globally to watch based on Dealroom Signal, a new predictive algorithm feature launched earlier this year.
According to Dealroom, these Top 100 lists are entirely data-driven using Dealroom Signal and have not been manually curated by the company’s analysts. Dealroom Signal is a new predictive algorithm feature launched earlier this year. Rather than creating a score about a startup’s general quality or performance, Dealroom Signal is specifically aimed at surfacing the most promising upcoming funding opportunities. The algorithm is therefore calibrated to find companies showing strong traction and which are predicted to be lining up for a funding event, or that are round-ready.
In this article, we have listed nine Dutch-based startups featured in Dealroom’s Top 100 Energy Startups to Watch list.
Photon Energy Group
Founder/s: Georg Hotar, Michael Gartner
HQ: Amsterdam
Photon Energy Group delivers solar energy and clean water solutions worldwide. Photon Energy, which provides solar power services, has built and commissioned solar power plants with a combined capacity of over 110 MWp and has power plants with a combined capacity of over 89 MWp in its proprietary portfolio.
The group’s second major business line, Photon Water, provides clean water solutions, including treatment and remediation services and developing and managing wells and other water resources.
Quatt
Founder/s: Flipse and Marijn Flipse
HQ: Amsterdam
Quatt designs AI-powered smart hybrid heat pumps to accelerate the decrease of gas consumption and the transition to fossil-free heating.
The company’s first product is Quatt Hybrid, a smart, all-electric-ready hybrid heat pump for the Dutch market that can save up to 80 per cent of the gas bill compared to a central heating boiler.
Quat says the hybrid heat pump is controlled by self-learning software. With a shortened chain and efficient installations, Quatt offers an average price of 30-50 per cent lower than traditional hybrid heat pumps.
E-magy
Founder/s: Casper Peeters, Bert Kraaijveld, Axel Schönecker
HQ: Broek op Langedijk, North Holland
E-magy designs and manufactures nano-porous silicon material for advanced lithium-ion batteries.
The Amsterdam-based company aims to bring sustainable solutions to the battery industry through this solution, focusing on providing low-cost solar silicon solutions, manufacturing costs, and enabling large-scale market application.
E-magy’s solution can be used in various other devices such as e-bikes and scooters, drones, computers and handheld devices, medical devices, and electric energy storage systems for balancing (renewable) energy supply and demand.
DeWarmte
Founder/s: Auke de Vries, Sander Wapperom
HQ: Delft
DeWarmte aims to create a CO2-neutral heat supply by transforming domestic wastewater into new, usable energy through a product called HeatCycle. The device extracts heat from domestic sewage, and the recycled heat is used to make hot tap water. According to the Dutch company, the Heatcycle reduces CO2 emissions in the home and offers affordable and sustainable heating solutions.
GBM Works
Founder/s: Ben Arntz
HQ: Utrecht
GBM Works, a spinoff from the Delft University of Technology, has developed a method for anchoring wind turbines in the seabed almost without noise. The Dutch company does this by using a water jet to liquefy the soil inside the tube. The company is on a mission to provide a silent and cost-effective method and machines for installing wind turbine foundations offshore.
Ocean Grazer
Founder/s: Marijn van Rooij, Max Duursma
HQ: Groningen
Ocean Grazer is a Dutch startup and a spinoff from the University of Groningen. The Dutch company develops hybrid solutions for the offshore renewable energy sector — Ocean Battery. It is an energy storage system that functions like a hydroelectric dam at the bottom of the sea.
It is designed to be installed on the seafloor near offshore renewable energy generators, like floating solar farms, tidal energy systems, and wind turbines.
BioBTX
Founder/s: NA
HQ: Groningen
BioBTX is a circular chemistry technology developer that aims to replace fossil resources with biomass & plastic waste. The Dutch company has developed an integrated catalytic pyrolysis process that maximises BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers) yield and minimises operational costs, enabling clients to access sustainable BTX materials with lower carbon emissions, free from fossil resources.
Hygro
Founder/s: NA
HQ: Alkmaar
Hygro is your green hydrogen supplier. The Dutch company offers a scalable, cost-competitive solution to produce green hydrogen in the early market. Hygro says green hydrogen can solve a lot of inefficiencies in the production process, transportation, and delivery. The Dutch company’s mission is to develop, build and operate a sustainable, integrated supply chain with hydrogen as the primary energy carrier.
ACS Buildings
Founder/s: Guido Bartelink, Sietse Damstra
HQ: Groningen
ACS Buildings is a climatic control company that aims to help clients save at least 20 per cent of their energy bills by optimising their buildings through smart software based on data and machine learning. The Dutch company’s platform ‘Climatics’ collects all data from the building during installation and provides a deeper insight into the energy performance of the building.
